Niger Delta Communities' Leaders Threaten To Attack Oil Facilities by nazzyon(m): 7:19pm On Jul 09, 2017
By Abdulwaheed Usamah,

Leaders across communities in Niger Delta have threatened to return to attacking of oil facilities since Federal Government was yet to fulfill its part of their agreement, just as they accused the government of been full of empty promises.

They said that if they return to violence, it would derail any broader recovery in the crude-dependent economy and caused efforts to secure peace in the oil heartlands of the Niger Delta.

It would be recalled that delegations including Acting Presiden,  Yemi Osinbaj, have been engaging the region communities' leader in various talks since February to broker peace and end restiveness within the zone.

However, after the peace was brokered, Oil exports are now set to exceed 2 million barrels per day (bpd) in August, the highest in 17 months, from as little as just over 1 million bpd at certain points 2017, due to a steady decline in attacks on pipelines, providing a much-needed injection of cash into Nigerian government coffers.

But ex-militants and local chieftains alleged that since after series town hall discussions, little has been done by the government which has not followed up on issues raised, and that it was  stalling on key demands and has not even appointed a full-time negotiating team.

The leaders further threatened that If the Niger Delta communities continue to feel Abuja is ignoring their needs, indigenes may resort to only tactic that has ever yielded results, which they said would be attacks on oil facilities.
