CORPERS ATTACKED BY ARMED ROBBERS IN AHOADA EAST, RIVERS STATE

Contrary to the belief of people that Rivers state being an oil producing state, has a lot of opportunities and incentives for corp members serving in this state, this philosophy happens to be false. River state is one of the most insecured, hostile, and lack of welfare and hospitality for its corp members. This is an account of our experience during service.

On Monday 10th of July, 2017. At about 1am in the dusk of the morning, at our corpers lodge somewhere in Ahoada east LGA, we were burgled by about 8 or more armed men with guns. They made entry to our lodge through the window. They came with tools which they used to break the iron grilled protector at the window. About two of us attempted to run out of the house to seek for help but we were double crossed by the armed men and battered. They brought them back into the lodge, came and stole our phones, laptops, food items, money, even a gas cooker, amongst other valuables.

Our principal whose lodge was close to ours, despite all the cry out we made to him did not attempt to call the police or any other security agents. This robbery lasted for about an hour and amazingly, a security van was patrolling the major road of the premises blowing their lousy siren but had no clue of what was going on.
We reported the case to the police division in Ahoada east but they said we need to pay the sum of #5000 for them to carry out signaling before any investigation can commence, then I wondered if this whole "federal government pikin" thing is a ruse.

We have reported also to our Local Government Inspector and Zonal Inspector but we still await a reasonable outcome. The estimated value of what they took from us is over #700k in current market. And some of us actually borrowed loans from paylater, access bank, EmpowerTheCorps(ETC) loan, to buy some of this items that were stolen.

This is not the first time this is happening. It has also happened to some of our colleagues in Edeoha community where they were robbed and matcheted at the back. The annoying part of everything is that the "oil-producing state" does not even pay #5naira to its corp members and also the PPA as well. Even the little you have, the indigenes will inflate the prices of commodities once they know you are a corp member. Not to talk of the scary look they give to you when you walk on the street.

This is the dilemma we face in the name of serving our father land. We await to see what NYSC, the Federal Government, the State Government and also the Local Government will do concerning this. If truly the NYSC scheme cares about the welfare and security of its future leaders.
