Recently,a family of 6 were discovered dead in their home in river state. There have been many other cases similar to that happening in other parts of the country. The suspected cause of these deaths was carbon monoxide poisoning from an electrical generator's exhaust fumes.

Using a generator indoors can kill you in minutes.Generator exhaust contains high levels of carbon monoxide(CO),a poisonous gas you cannot see or smell. If you can smell the generator exhaust, you are breathing CO. But even if you cannot smell the exhaust, you could be breathing CO

Safety Tips
1)Never use a generator inside homes, garages or other partly enclosed areas because deadly levels of carbon monoxide can build up in these areas.Using a fan or opening windows and doors does not supply enough fresh air.

2)Use portable generators outside only, far away from the home. The generator must be at least 10 ft away from your home.

3)Keep the generator outdoors, away from doors, windows and vents that could allow carbon monoxide to come indoors.

4)Also don't use grill, camp stove or other petrol, propane, natural gas or charcoal-burning devices inside a home, garage, basement or any partially enclosed area.
The same applies to warming a car in an enclosed garage.

5)Use battery-operated CO alarms or plug-in CO alarms with battery back-up in your home and outside sleeping areas to provide early warning of accumulating carbon monoxide, according to the manufacturer's installation instructions.Test the CO alarms and replace dead batteries.
If the carbon monoxide alarm sounds, move quickly to a fresh air location outdoors or by an open window or door.

Remember:
Carbon monoxide,CO can't be seen or smelled,it can rapidly lead to full incapacitation and death. Even if you cannot smell exhaust fumes, you may still be exposed to CO.If you start to feel sick, dizzy,or weak while using a generator, get to fresh air right away.Do not delay.
