How To Import Cars From USA To Nigeria by FliWheel: 11:39pm On Jul 31, 2017 |
The Nigerian Car Market Nigeria is one of the largest markets for used car imports from the United States. These include both clean and salvage title vehicles. Toyota and Lexus are the most popular makes for import. For Toyota, the Camry, Corolla, Avalon, 4Runner and Sequoia models are popular while for Lexus the RX and ES models are the most popular. In addition a variety of other makes and models are imported including Japanese and European manufacturers such as Honda, Mercedes, and Land Rover etc. Imported vehicles are referred to as Tokunbo which means ‘from overseas’. Cars are also imported via land borders, for example, from Cotonou, Benin. Vehicles that are imported via sea shipping arrive at the Tin Can Island Port (TCIP) or the Lagos Port Complex. Nigeria does not have any domestic car production so it relies on imports to meet local requirements. Purchasing from the United States Vehicles imported from the United States to Nigeria typically come from car auctions in the United States. Salvage vehicles are purchased from Auctions such as IAAI (Insurance Auction) and Copart. Clean title vehicles are purchased from auction such as Manheim, ADESA and smaller regional and local auctions. Cars can also be purchased from used car dealers, however these dealers are hesitant to deal directly with overseas buyers. Finally, a car may be purchased from an individual seller. While this may offer the best price, it is difficult to verify the identity of the seller and complete a deal safely. Export Logistics Once the car has been purchased it must be transported to the closest warehouse or shipping port. The cost of transport depends on the size of the vehicle, its location and the number of miles it must be moved. For container shipping, the vehicle is normally taken to the freight forwarder’s warehouse, where it is loaded into a container. Different size containers are available. Cars are typically shipped in a 20ft, 40ft or 45ft container. Container shipping is the most economical way to ship cars when there are multiple vehicles. Vehicles can also be driven onto the ship and held in place by a harness. This is referred to as Roll on Roll off or RoRo. To ship RoRo, a car must be in good working condition. The car title must also be available as it is used to receive export clearance from US Customs. Depending on the US port where the car is shipped out from, the transit time is anywhere between 20 to 30 days. Once the Car Arrives at the Port You should hire a customs clearance agent in advance and provide them all the necessary documents so that they can move quickly when the car arrives at the port. From the United States, the car buyer needs the vehicle Invoice/Bill of Sale and the shipper’s Bill of Lading. Additionally, to save money on sending physical documents from overseas, a telex release can be used. This releases the vehicle to the consignee in Nigeria and does not require physical original Bill of Lading to be presented. The import duty is 35% of the cars FOB value as assessed by Nigerian customs. You will also incur other costs such as terminal charges and custom agent’s fee. Benefits of Importing There are many benefits of importing a car instead of buying one locally. The biggest benefit is the difference in price. Importers charge thousands of dollars in markup to buyers. When a buyer can purchase and import from overseas directly themselves, they can save this amount. This would allow them to purchase their dream car for less or to sell the car locally and make a handsome profit. The second benefit is that by importing a vehicle themselves, the buyer knows exactly what they are getting in terms of the vehicle condition. When buying from local dealers, it is difficult to accurately assess the condition of the vehicle. By buying through FliWheel.co, you can purchase the full Carfax and/or Autocheck report for the vehicle, showing the entire history, including number of previous owners, mileage, any accidents that may have occurred, maintenance history, type of title (clean, salvage etc.) and any other red flags. Buyers also have the option of ordering a detailed vehicle inspection. This involves our inspection company representative physically inspection the vehicle and providing a detailed 150 point inspection report covering the interior, exterior, drive and mechanical components. A very good job by this poster. Thanks a million times for giving out such an invaluable piece free of any charge unlike some thieves always talking about crappy e-books with less quality info. These are the kind of posts that should dominate front page not always about tonto dickey or some fraudsters scamming some gullible illiterates in the name of one castle built in the air. |

Hi OP, I can see that you're doing a nice job here. I have couple of questions to ask regarding importing vehicles from abroad. how can one ascertain that the vehicle engine is quite good and sound even if it is described as run and drive? can one rely completely on comprehensive report in the purchase of a car? |
