I begin with the Name of Allaah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful

“And live with them (wives) honourably. If you dislike them, it may be that you dislike a thing and Allaah brings through it a great deal of good.” Q4:19

One of the essence of marriage is to put an end to depression and not to start it. The Islamic marital system is so perfect that it neither leaves no room for any oppressive and abusive relationship nor does it allow for a dominating one but rather it advocates for a mutually balanced union that serves as a cushion against all troubles.

However, if both parties are oblivious of their duties and responsibilities, the society is bound to face a troubling rise in the number of failed marriages and unfortunate unions.

The contemporary society has inherited a cultural baggage from its recent past, this cultural baggage seeks to exaggerate rights of husband at detriment of rights of the wife.

Islam not only gave women rights but also heights. The Prophet said: “Fear Allaah with regard to women, for you have taken them as a trust from Allaah”. Narrated by Muslim

Amidst many terrible and pathetic marital crisis, there seems to be a major misconception about the Islamic stands on beating/hitting the wife. A misconception under whose pretext some men hide to go beyond set limits to inflict untold harms on innocent wives. But without prejudice, sometimes the reverse is the case. The woman becomes the bully.

Be it as it may, the verse of the Qur’an that contains the phrase “beat them lightly” has to be understood in the right context. Allaah says: “As to those women on whose part you see ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (next) refuse to share their beds, (and last) beat them (lightly, if it is useful), but if they return to obedience, seek not against them means (of announce). Surely, Allaah is Ever Most High, Most Great.” Qur’an 4:34

Undoubtedly, each field of study has its professionals and it will be a great act of injustice for a medical doctor to seek to explain engineering terminology of which he has no knowledge. Applying same logic, it will be an act of wrongdoing to seek to explain an Islamic concept without having the proper knowledge thereof. Hence, for an individual or a group to fully understand this, there is need to respect the respective scholars of Qur’anic commentary.
