I have about 20 friends who are aspiring musicians and so do my other friends too. It's a crazy hustle for anyone who wants to make it big in the mainstream. It takes years of patience and perseverance, believing in yourself and trying so hard not to give in to people who try to discourage you. Whether it's for the sake of passion, money, women. Every aspiring musician faces almost the same set of hurdles, here are 7 things every aspiring musician should know.

7.patience is required

Frustration is obviously going to come along in the process of being a mainstream musician. Years and years of putting effort and dedication to the hustle but still no result . Many people aspiring give up because they cannot handle this frustration. It's however helpful to know that most of the top artist in the nation didn't just make it in a day of starting. It took them years of trying and being rejected even by the audience that appreciates them today.

6. Always have a backup plan

Some motivational speakers would advice that If you really want something, you should  dive at it. This doesn't really work in this case. You should have a back up plan in case things don't go as planned, get an education or learn a trade. Don't go all in, put one foot in and the other somewhere else.

5. it doesn't really matter how good you are

You have a good voice or you probably studied music in one of the top schools in the nation. Sadly, it doesn't guarantee your success. when you take that out of your mind, you'll be ready to move forward in your aspiration. This doesn't restrict you to not learning about music and musical instruments. It just means from a lot of the popular songs we see today, we can confidently say talent or educational level isn't a yardstick to measure for success in this field.

4. you need promo!!!

One of my favorite lines in ''softwork by falz is when he said "even real talent still need promo". Well anything in entertainment you need a promo to give you the required boost,  from my experience, people won't listen to your music if you drop your track to be listened to. They won't even play it again even if it's good. I can't really say if they are ashamed, but you need something to bring you out, it could be a radio station or a website like www.sauceandsound.com ( we eat your cash and make you famous in the process of taking your money) or even a professional musician.'

3. Start a beef

We were almost forgetting about Vic O, until we heard about him threatening Don jazzy. Well played Mr Vic O, well played!!. You are allowed to throw some punches, not literally though, to make the headlines. The audience like that kind of stuff.  But be careful who you pick a fight with. Some professional rappers can demolish your career while you're still laying the foundation or even give you a black eye.

2. you're not famous yet, be cheap!!!

A lot aspiring musicians don't understand the concept of the law of demand and supply. There are tons of people willing to perform for free. So I don't understand why someone who has zero plays on radio would be greedy to ask for a hundred thousand naira minus transportation fare. You'll simply be passed on. No one would hire you and that's bad publicity. Rather reduce your price or even perform for free. So that your demand increases and your price would increase along the line.
