The world richest man Bill Gate has made a whopping record by making his largest donation in 17 years, by giving away $4.6 billion worth of shares in Microsoft Corp. The co-founder of Microsoft who has been the world’s richest man, donated over 64 million shares accounting for five percent of his overall fortune. This was made known from the Securities & Exchange Commission filing released Monday and was also cited by Bloomberg.

Though the recipient of the donation is yet to be disclosed in the filing. Majority of his past donations were made to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the charity set up by Gates and his wife to promote global development.

In June 2006, Gates who had been CEO of Microsoft announced that he would be making a transition from full-time work at Microsoft to part-time work while committing his full-time work at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He would later handover his functions to Ray Ozzie and Craig Mundie. In February 2014, he stepped down as chairman of Microsoft, the company he co-founded in 1975 along with Paul Allen.

Based on the foundation’s most recent financial statement, the billionaire philanthropist most recent pledge takes his overall charitable donations to approximately $50 billion.

In 2000, Gates gave away more than $20 billion worth of shares, according to Bloomberg calculations.

Since 1987, Gates has been included in the Forbes list of the world’s wealthiest people. Gates’ estimated net worth as of July 2017 is $89.9 billion. He was briefly overtaken by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos as the world’s richest man on 27 July this year.
