Do you remember Yokozuna? I clearly remember the auditorium wildly erupting when another wrestler (I forget now) lifted him up and slammed him on the canvas. He also defeated The Undertaker in Wrestlemania 90 something (i forget).

Back in the 90s when his popularity was at it's peak, I always found this dude very fascinating, especially when he sat those oversized buttocks of his on the faces of his contenders. THAT was his killer move; nearly suffocating the opponent in masses of jiggly, flabby flesh. I always imagined how the butt smelt...ewww. embarassed I admired his handsome face though grin

Be that as it may, I had no idea he has been dead for 17 long years. Yep, since 2000. A shocked fan, who also just discovered that the dude has been dead a long time did some research and posted the below on his Facebook page.

(1) Yokozuna wasn't Japanese,as everybody including myself thought.He was actually a full blooded American born in California,US.His Asiatic features are gotten from his Polynesian roots,as he is of Samaon ancestry(Like those Americans from Hawaii that look like Chinese).

(2) His real name was Rodney Agatupu Anoai.'Yokozuna' was actually just his ring name which refers to the highest rank in professional Sumo wrestling in Japan.
.
(3) Yokozuna weighed 291 Kg and was 6 feet 5 inches tall.
.
(4) Yokozuna was never actually a Sumotori(Sumo wrestler),but he received different phases of training from in and outside the US,including Mexico,and went under the special tutelage of a Japanese American--Mr. Fuji,who always escorted Yoko to the ring waving the Japanese flag and holding a wooden bucket of salt.
.
(5) Sumo wrestlers are a special order of Japanese traditional martial artists who are fattened excessively in dedicated camps to great bulk and trained in a special style of competitive full-contact wrestling.
.
(6) Yokozuna and I were actually birthday mates!....woww.He was born on October 2nd and I was born on October 3rd!
A libran as myself!!

Sooo...October 2,1966 and died in October 23,2000.

(7) The cause of his death was Pulmonary Edema as a result of overweight and clogging of his both lungs and heart.
Dude was approaching 550kg,and changed from being big and incredibly fit to outrightly obese and fat!!!

( 8 ) Yoko had just 2 children at the time of his death.

He is from a family of legendary wrestlers. I posted this earlier this year.

They were the first members of the family that I knew.

Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) is one of their nephews, Rocky Johnson is their in-law (he is actually Dwayne Johnson's father) and Yokozuna and Fatu/Rikishi are also their relatives. The great Supafly Jimmy Snuka is also their in-law.

Their great Grand father gave their sons a great foundation.

I can safely say that he wasn't really determined to keep fit.

I have seen persons as fat as Yokozuna who through rigorious and constant exercises, did loose considerable amount of fatty deposits..

Here's a chance to see Yokozuna when he was younger.

The first members of the family that I knew were the famous Wild Samoans (Afa and Sika). They fought in the IWA in the late '70s and early '80s. Then I also got to know Jimmy Supafly Snuka and Rocky Johnson who fought in the NWA and WWF.

Here's an IWA match in which Yokozuna (then known as Kokina) accompanied his uncle, Afa and his cousin Samu to the ring.

I knew he has been dead since. But i never knew he was never Japanese.. I still remember that his scary entrance song.. And dat his legendary match with undertaker.. Where he put undertaker inside his own coffin, locked it.. He opened it ND undertaker wasnt inside.. I fear dat day.. grin

Rocky Johnson (who was one of my least favourite wrestlers) married Afa and Sika's cousin, Ata Maivia and they gave birth to Dwayne Johnson (aka Rocky Maivia or The Rock).
