[b]There are two types of cholesterol HDL (high-density lipoproteins) and LDL (low-density lipoproteins). The HDL is good for us. The easy way to remember this is H is for health. The LDL is generally bad for us L stands for lethal. A high LDL cholesterol level is one of the major risk factors for developing heart disease and stroke, whilst low cholesterol is associated with depression. Ideally, 20%-40% of your total cholesterol should be HDL. There is also a type of cholesterol, VLDL (very low-density lipoprotein) which is extremely bad for you. Ideally, your cholesterol reading should be between 3.0mm01/and 5 mmol/1. As soon as your cholesterol reading goes above 5.2 you are at a higher risk 'of contracting heart diseases, If on the other hand, your cholesterol reacting is below 3.0, it tends to indicate that your liver is not functioning properly and there may be an underlying problem such as undiagnosed food intolerance.
When cholesterol is high your liver is not breaking down the LDL cholesterol properly, so it is important to keep your liver as healthy as possible. Low cholesterol can also denote' an imbalance in the Liver.
Food for cholesterol
Fish eaten on a regular basis helps elevate HDL cholesterol and when combined with onion in a meal it is very effective at lowering LDL cholesterol. Only fish contains essential fats that help to protect the heart.
Add more beans, especially red kidney beans plus lentils to your diet as they are good sources of soluble fiber and help to replace the protein you may be missing if you suddenly cut meat out of the diet.
Try rice milk instead of full-fat cow's milk.
If you enjoy soy-based foods like soy yogurt and milk there is plenty of evidence that soy can help lower LDL cholesterol. healthy fats are found in oily fish, avocados, sunflower, pumpkin, linseeds and sesame seeds and their unrefined cold oils.
Include almonds, walnuts, nuts in your diet as they are rich sources of minerals, fiber and vitamin E and they help lower LDL cholesterol levels.
Two minerals, in particular, magnesium and Potassium, are very protective of the heart. Green vegetables, cereals, honey, sunflower seeds, fresh and dried fruits are rich in these minerals.



Reduce or Eliminate

Reduce all foods containing saturated fats including pork, beef, sausages, meat pies, butter, chicken skin, ice cream and all dairy products except fully skimmed milk and its products.
Eggs are a rich source of choline which is great for memory and in recent years eggs have been much-maligned but many scientists now believe that it's the frying that damages the cholesterol which triggers many health problems, not the cholesterol itself. Boiling an egg, therefore, does not damage cholesterol, the lesson being not to eat fried eggs.
Coffee, particularly percolated coffee or microwed coffee can increase cholesterol levels.
