An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a test used to evaluate the electrical activity in the brain. Brain cells communicate with each other through electrical impulses. An EEG can be used to help detect potential problems associated with this activity.

Why you may need an EEG
The EEG is used to evaluate various types of brain disorders, that may affect the brain activity such as:
1. Altered consciousness-such as stuporous, semi-comatose or comatose states.
2. Seizure disorders - especially atypical seizure variants in patients experiencing bizarre, distressing symptoms.
3. Brain Tumours, suspected
4. Head Trauma - injury where slowing or suppression of voltage production is due to a contusion or a subdural hematoma.
5. Headaches- such as with migraine syndrome
6. Brain Abscess - differential diagnosis of diffuse versus focal inflammatory disease.
7. Metabolic encephalopathy - where characteristic triphasic slow waves may be present.
8. Behavioural Disorders/Psychiatric evaluations.
9. Adolescent disorders - such as ADD, ADHD, depression or anxiety issues.
10. Intermittent Explosive Disorder - The disorder typically starts at age 14 and is often followed by other mental health problems
11. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder - type of anxiety disorder

14. Restless Legs Syndrome
15. Shaken Baby Syndrome - is a form of child abuse which refers to brain injury that happens to the child.
The electrical impulses in an EEG recording look like wavy lines with peaks and valleys. These lines allow our doctors to quickly assess whether there are abnormal patterns. Any irregularities may be a sign of brain disorders.

Preparing for an EEG test at Afriglobal Medicare? here are the things you should know

1. Call us to know if we will ask you to stop taking any medications before the test.
2. Wash your hair the night before the EEG, and don’t put any products (such as sprays or gels) in your hair on the day of the test.
3. Avoid consuming any food or drinks containing caffeine for at least eight hours prior to the test.
4. We may ask you to sleep as little as possible the night before the test if you’re required to sleep during the EEG.
