All is now set for the 5th Biennial International Conference of the Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies.

The event is slated for September 18 – 22, 2019 at the University of Ilorin.

According to a statement by Dr. Malfouz M. Adedimeji and obtained by our reporter, the conference would have Prof Martin Ursula Oswald Spring, a full time professor and researcher at the National University of Mexico, in the Regional Multidisciplinary Research Centre (CRIM) and the first MRF-Chair on Social Vulnerability at United National University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) as its keynote speaker at the event with the theme: Managing Human And Natural Disasters Strategies, Opportunities And Challenges.

Malfouz A. Adedimeji who is the host and Director of the Centre hinted that the topic is apt because of the sudden and unforeseen human and natural exigencies that test the capacities of state institution on one hand and expose fragility of social cohesion and individual resilience on the other.

According to him, “much as advanced countries with functional institutions are able to forecast as much as possible and respond to natural and human disasters especially those cause by violent conflict, terrorist attacks, wars and low-intensity conflicts continue to test the resolve capacity of stakeholders in the management and their attendant humanitarian crises across the world.”

The statement added that the centre considers it timely to create, “platform of interaction among schools, administrators and other stakeholders in the management of human and natural disasters, cognizant of broad ramifications that disasters and emergences have on state institution and society as attested during the Ebola Virus crisis of 2014.

The statement added, “This is why the centre opines in creating a safer and more secure world, the time for town and gown collaboration and inter-disciplinary cooperation is now.

“Following from the foregoing, the 5th biennial international conference of the centre is hinged on critically taking a holistic look at existing policies, practices and strategies of managing human and natural disaster in the country.”
