Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.

1Corinthians 14:22 KJV

It is said that speaking in tongues is a gift from holy spirit which of course will require same gift to understand and interprets. How can tongues be a sign for nonbelievers like me since I don't understand and have never understood any tongues ever spoken by a Christian.

Can a christian explain how blabbing Rakata senteribo yekoma sindateyima! can be a sign for nonbelievers like us?

Bros here it is in PLAIN ENGLISH

1 Corinthians 14:22-25Living Bible (TLB)

22 So you see that being able to “speak in tongues” is not a sign to God’s children concerning his power, but is a sign to the unsaved. However, prophecy (preaching the deep truths of God) is what the Christians need, and unbelievers aren’t yet ready for it.
23 Even so, if an unsaved person, or someone who doesn’t have these gifts, comes to church and hears you all talking in other languages, he is likely to think you are crazy.
24 But if you prophesy, preaching God’s Word, even though such preaching is mostly for believers,[a] and an unsaved person or a new Christian comes in who does not understand about these things, all these sermons will convince him of the fact that he is a sinner, and his conscience will be pricked by everything he hears.
25 As he listens, his secret thoughts will be laid bare, and he will fall down on his knees and worship God, declaring that God is really there among you.

If you can not understand these simplified version then you simply seek argument and no one has time for that!!!

You are only creating more problems. Check this:

Verse 22 - Speaking in tongues is a sign for unbelievers. They ain't ready yet for preaching. (OK)

Verse 23 - Discourages speaking in tongues in midst of unbelievers, else they think you are crazy
(then what signs according to first sentence of verse 22 will they now see?)

Verse 24 - People (unbelievers) who ain't ready yet for preaching (according to second sentence of verse 22), will still respond to preaching anyway
(HOW)

lol... you really need to study it well.

IF GOD IS STUPID then being BORN AGAIN is a scam

How can we say a BABY is born and the baby is given a name and takes breast milk then plays with toys and goes to school from nursery and learn alphabets in a language the parents speak then much later learn the parents dialect that make the child differentiated to a particular ETHNIC group then that process continues till the baby is now a MAN and a graduate with MASTERS DEGREE....

NOWWWWWWWWWWWWW THE MAN IS BORN AGAIN ...... Don't you see that by definition BORN.. means tho he is OUTWARDLY a man but in the Spiritual realm he is a BABY.... then that same kind of process he went through physically will have to be done on him spiritually GOD is now his FATHER and he need to speak like God and learn how to do things like HIS FATHER.... so his Father (GOD) gets him a TEACHER who is also COUNSELOR, STANDBY, ADVOCATE, DOCTOR (this is the HOLY SPIRIT)to cater for the child in the fathers house(CHURCH).

Since GOD is GOOD thats why as a GOOD FATHER he gets all his child needs at once.... BUT we must understand that tho there is similarity between the spiritual birth and physical, the TIME FRAME is different. Here on earth correct language is developed over time, In the Spirit it is gotten INSTANTLY and that is what you call SPEAKING IN TONGUES....

now... all that many many explanation should make you understand basics... lets go deeper

WHEN YOU BECOME BORN AGAIN, you get the same things and more that a physical baby gets... e.g NEW NAME, NEW CLOTHES, NEW NATIONALITY AND NEW ADDRESS, NEW DATE OF BIRTH, NEW PARENTS.... Everything changes BUT only in the Spirit realm. The LANGUAGE is the IDENTIFIER of heritage.... it is your language that tells us where you come from, LANGUAGE tells us what dialect, ethnicity and if you are a NIGERIAN or NOT. This is what that scripture was explaining o... When we speak in tongues or pray in tongues... THOSE WHO ARE NOT SAVED get to know that we are not the same with them, it is a sign TO them meaning that for someone who does not speak ENGLISH... letter A would probably be a DIAGRAM or LOGO or SIGN to them... till he/she grasps the language. So also the speaking in tongues is a SIGN to those who are not BORN AGAIN.... the SIGN is to tell them that we are not THE SAME o because it is a different language that is from a different place they dont know yet.

NOW verse 24 says UNBELIEVER or NEW CONVERT WHO DOES NOT UNDERSTAND (take note.. there is no contradiction... the person does not UNDERSTAND but will understand through hearing all of it because it is spoken in a language he understands)....... Verse 24 shows us that we grow from KNOWN to UNKNOWN.

so the person has to receive Jesus then come to know the Holyspirit and instantly starts speaking in tongues BUT will still need to be taught how to walk with the HOLYSPIRIT and use the GIFTS OF GOD he has been given.

grin its a sweet package. YOU RECEIVE IT FIRST BEFORE YOU ARE TAUGHT HOW TO USE IT.

Bros them

Speaking in tongue is speaking in different languages.

It has nothing to do with blabbing which happens when you speak too fast i.e while praying aloud in that case.

It's a gift from God.

Study the circumstances during the 1st event that lead to speaking in tongues.

There are more things tongues do than to be understood

1 Corinthians 14:2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.

But to God

By the way, don't call me a Bible scholar

wait, what does Bible scholar, forget
