I have tried on several occasions to do some online registration where my BVN was requested. Can BVN be used to defraud one? How sensitive is BVN?

Nothing sensitive about BVN number unless you have information to hide

If it is fear of unauthorized withdrawal or payment, it is not possible with just BVN
