Nigerian Architects/Home-builders Lacking Creativity? by 2buffagain(m): 11:25pm On Sep 26, 2017
Everytime I hear someone wants to build a house in Nigeria, I just know it's going to be something basic looking.
E.g I don't care how large this house is, I really still think it is basic.

I would really like to start seeing houses like the ones attached below in Naija.

It doesn't have to be so large, just "Different", interesting futuristic architecture.

Having said this, I would like architects in the house to estimate how much it would take to build any of the below.
BTW these are actual houses, not just concepts.

Frank Gehry said 'i dont know why people hire Architects and then tell them what to do'.
And dude is right..my grouse with this sort of comment or 'bias' is that people who make such comment have little exposure, you just randomly pick a subject and assume you are right.

I wont go into too much detail, but i can speak for myself and a few others, that Nigerian Architects are not in anyway lazy. It only seems so because we find ourselves in a rigid system that only picks at innovations like a pelican i.e. everyone is comfortable with the status quo. Besides our economy is not so robust to manage certain extremities / construction adventure.

Now to your question, those houses you posted there are modern architecture designs and contrary to your belief, not everyone in your idea of the western world live in houses like that. Houses like that are high end and elitist so to say.

Its just like saying you dont see Ferraris, Aston Martins, Lamborghinis, Bugattis, maseratis , Porsches and similar cars because our car dealers are lazy and refuse to learn new ideas or improve their trade, i mean assertions like that are borderline devoid of sound reasoning.

However, if you feel you can fund such projects with its attendant technicalities, specialist requirements and the need to source for scarce materials, there are a few Nigerian Architects who can change your opinions about them.

BTW, some of those houses you feel are 'basic' have estimates that will scare the taste out of your caviar buds.

You even took out time to respond to such post. I think the best thing, he should just get the services of an Architect/Engineer and let him be billed for whatever nature of structure he wants.
There are lots of funny characters in NL and I keep wondering how did this come to be.

Stop being so melodramatic.
The post and it's title is meant to challenge architects in Nigeria.
As you can see, the title is phrased as a question.

I expect voluminous exchange of inspiration to up the architectural appeal of new nigerian buildings....not weakly succumbing to defeat... implying that current Nigerian home architecture needs no improvement.

How many clients in nigeria can afford to build exceptional buildings in nigeria? undecided
When they can't even acquire enough land to accommodate their desired structure & u are here talking about creativity?
Abeg u people should stop blaming architects...When most clients are looking for the cheapest means to execute their projects.

Creativity requires money to execute
Even in USA it is one pattern of build...Mind blowing buildings are erected for special purpose because it is costly

Good response. Now we're talking.

A basic house with a huge estimate is still a basic house.
As I mentioned, great architecture is not about size.

As to the comment on exposure: I'm not based in Naija smiley
I'm not so silly as to believe that "everyone in the western world live in houses like that", but we DO agree that elitists in the western world do. So does Naija not have its own elitists?

Perhaps we just need more young money in Naija as it is mostly the old (and the backward political elite that feel it is perfectly okay to govern a country without 24 hr electricity) that seem to have money right now.

I look forward to a time when naija can show up and represent in some of these global architectural expos!

In the mean time, to claim creativity, a group of architects need to even be able to conceptualize what they cannot build right now due to financial restraints. All the concepts I have seen from nigerian architects still seem rather basic.

Have our architects lost the ability to dream because of present situation?
