The Lagos State Government has urged residents of the state to explore its free legal services whenever their fundamental human rights are trampled upon.

Officials of the eight agencies and units under the Lagos State Ministry of Justice were in the Agege area of the state on Thursday to sensitise residents to free legal services being rendered by the government to the masses.

During the sensitisation, under the Legal Clinic of the Ministry of Justice, officials of the agencies and units visited the Agege Local Government Area secretariat, the Hausa community and Isokoko Market, among others.

The Director, Public Advice Centre, Ministry of Justice, Tola Akinsanya, said the government wanted the people to know about the Legal Clinic where free legal services could be accessed by Lagosians.

She said Lagosians could explore the Citizens Mediation Centre when they had disputes which could be settled amicably rather than going to court, adding that they could also explore the free legal services of the Office of the Public Defender.

“If you need legal counsel, OPD can defend you free; you can also go to the Citizens Mediation Centre to mediate in the dispute between you and your employer. If your case is on fundamental human right, you have the Citizens Rights to help you,” she said.

Akinsanya said Governor Akinwunmi Ambode ordered that the Legal Clinic be established to cater to the legal needs of Lagosians.

Director, CMC, Oluwatoyin Odusanya, said the centre explored the option of Alternative Dispute Resolution to resolve disputes.

She added that the ADR mechanism of dispute resolution was best in handling disputes rather than litigation, adding that the centre had been established in 18 locations across the state.
