1833 Sep 29, A civil war broke out in Spain between Carlisists, who believed Don Carlos deserved the throne, and supporters of Queen Isabella.
1967 Sep 29, Author Carson McCullers (b.1917) died in Nyack, N.Y., at age 50. Her first novel “The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter" explores the spiritual isolation of misfits and outcasts of the US South. Her short story “The Ballad of the Sad Café" (1951) was turned into a play by Edward Albee and was made into a film (1991) of the same name with Vanessa Redgrave.
1978 Sep 29, Mary Vincent (15), was raped, maimed and left for dead in a canyon near Modesto, Ca. She lived and identified Lawrence Singleton as her assailant. He was convicted but released after serving 8 years of a 14 year sentence. In 1997 he was arrested for the murder of woman, Roxanne Hayes, a prostitute, in Tampa, Florida. A trial in Dec 1997 ended in a mistrial and another was set for 1998. He was sentenced to death in 1998, but died of cancer in 2001 in a Florida prison hospital.

1988 Sep 29, Florence Griffith Joyner and Jackie Joyner-Kersee of the U.S. won their second gold medals of the Seoul Olympics, in the 200-meter and the long jump, respectively.
1989 Sep 29, Actress Zsa Zsa Gabor was convicted of battery for slapping a Beverly Hills police officer who had pulled over her Rolls-Royce for expired license plates. As part of her sentence, Gabor served three days in jail.

2007 Sep 29, Lois Maxwell (b.1927), the woman James Bond never seduced, died in Western Australia. The Canadian-born actress, born as Lois Ruth Hooker, took on the Miss Moneypenny role in 1962 alongside Sean Connery in "Dr No," and continued for 14 Bond films. Her films also included "Bedtime For Bonzo" with Ronald Reagan.
2008 Sep 29, Kelsey Peterson (26), a former 6th grade math teacher in Nebraska, was sentenced to 6 years in federal prison for having sex with a 13-year-old boy student beginning in Nov, 2006. In 2009 Peterson was sentenced to 8-10 years after pleading guilty to 2 state counts of 1st-degree sexual assault of a minor.
2009 Sep 29, Beauty queen Miss Singapore World gave up her crown after it emerged that she had stolen credit cards to go on a shopping spree for lingerie. Ris Low had come under public pressure to be stripped of her 2009 title, after local media reported she stole seven credit cards last year while working at a medical clinic, buying goods worth about S$8,000 ($5,662) including gold anklets and phones.
