A common features in many communities in Nigeria is the emergence of vigilante groups. These groups were set up in collaboration with the police to practice what is termed community policing.
Membership of the vigilante group s usually comprise of youths handpicked by the community and sent to the DPO for confirmation. In most cases, these are illiterate youths who were criminals previously terrorising their communities. Consequently, their modus operandi are quite crude and archaic. Sometimes, they carry out extra judicial exercises such as stripping their victims nude and mercilessly thrashed them for minor offences. Furthermore, they often extort money from their victims in the form of fines and bail.
Most of them have no training on how to handle civil cases and consequently, with the gun in hand, assume they are the law.
Another major challenge is their source of funds. Since they are not paid by the government, (despite the security votes,) their only source of funding is to impose fees on members of their respective communities, collecting between 200 and 1000 naira monthly from inhabitants. At times, they mal-treat those who are unable to pay, handling them over to police. What is the legality of these forms of collections? They have been handy tools in the hands of wealthy politicians, using them to shoot and kill their opponents and branding them cultists or ritualists.
Are vigilante groups really necessary? Should individual inhabitants be forced to pay for their so called security? What then are the roles of policemen, civil fence groups, the peace corps and so on? How can their excesses be checked?
Your opinion is important in this regard.

Vigilantes are more effective than police in all ways.

They are the only security operatives that guard streets effectively while the police are fast asleep in their offices. If you have a police guarding your streets steadily at night please mention me.

They are confident and dedicated. If thieves are aware of the presence of a vigilante in an area they will avoid the area like a plague or they go there with full force if they are desperate. But with police, it's always a good day for the thieves.

All this and many more makes Vigilante more useful than the police

Villante has a very core role to play if govt is to fight crime effectly oo, although the ones in Lagos na dangbana they are only after their daily bread but those in deep villages are very very effective in their jobs especially for the fact they already know everyone and anyone.

So vigilante roles are still very crucial.
