In the past, the certificates students get at the end of their academic programmes were all that was needed to secure great jobs and enjoy blissful careers.

Now, all that has changed.

The certificate you'll get after you graduate will still be very important especially in Nigeria however, there are 2 other things that have proven to be more important.

This means that even if you graduate with good grades/certificate but have none of these 2 things, finding a good job and pursuing your dream career can become very difficult.

What are these 2 things?

#1. 'Connection'
#2. Skill

#1. Connection
In Nigeria when we say 'connection' (in the context of our discussion) we’re referring to a person’s network. The group of caring, dedicated people (friends, colleagues, mentors, family, etc.) who can support someone’s activities.

As someone rightly said: "Your network determines your net worth".

In present day Nigeria, you need certain level of connections to efficiently pursue your career or even get employment.

But the misconception by most us is that having and making use of ‘connections’ to achieve one’s goals is wrong or immoral. But that is far from the truth.

There’s nothing wrong with having 'connections'. So, stop complaining and start making connections.

The key point is this:

Build & make connections while still in school; you’ll find them useful after you graduate.

#2. Skill

The importance of skill cannot be overemphasized. Your connections plus certificate can get you a job but it is the skill you’ve got that will keep you in the job.

Management always easily spot those without skill and when there’s need for retrenchment, the unskilled folks are the first to be fingered especially when the 'connection' that got them in is retired or out of the system.

Are there other things you think are more important than the certificate a student will get? You can add to the list in the comment section.
