Newborns need frequent nappy changes to keep them comfortable and prevent rashes. Here’s how you can do it. At birth, baby’s tummy is very small and therefore it only has a very small capacity. All of this means you’ll need frequent nappy changes to keep your newborn clean, happy and rash-free.

Here’s how to handle nappy changes like a pro:

Be prepared

-Begin with thoroughly washing your hands.
-Next, make sure you have all the items you’ll need: new nappy, plenty of wipes and rash cream (if necessary).
-Finally, place your baby on the changing area, whether on an elevated changing table or a changing pad on the bed.

Note: Never leave your baby unattended. In the time it takes to step away to get hold of a wipe, your baby can wriggle and roll off a high surface. This is why you should get all the must-haves together before nappy changing begins.

Changing

-Unfold and place the new nappy under your baby. That way, once baby is cleaned up, you’ll be ready to go.
-Unfasten both tabs of the dirty nappy and gently take baby’s ankles in one hand to lift up his bum. If the nappy is dirty, use the front half of the current nappy to wipe off as much poo as possible.
-When finished, tuck the front of the nappy underneath your baby, clean-side up.

Note: If you’re changing a boy, stay alert. Consider placing a cloth over his front to avoid any little mishaps.

-Using a baby wipe or damp cloth, finish cleaning up any remaining wee and/or poo. If changing a girl, you should clean from front to back to avoid causing an infection. Also, remember to check and wipe clean the baby’s lower back. If needed, apply some soothing rash cream.

Cleaning up

-Fold up and throw away the dirty nappy using the tabs to hold it all together. Your clean nappy is already in place, so now simply fold up the front half.
-For boys, make sure the genitals are pointed down to keep him from urinating over the top of the nappy. If baby still has the umbilical cord stump, just fold down the front of the nappy to accommodate it. Special nappies are also available to buy that have a space already cut out for it.
-Finally, secure the nappy on both sides with the tabs.
That’s it!

Now you can enjoy time with your clean, happy baby, although it won’t be too long before you’ll have to repeat the process all over again.
