It was a difficult series of world cup qualifiers for Argentina as they were facing danger of elimination but Lionel Messi led the team through to Russia. Going into the last game of the qualifier against Ecuador, Argentina were seated in 6th place and needed only a win to give them any hope of making it to Russia next year. Ecuador made matters worse as they took the lead 40 seconds into the match but Messi stepped up and, courtsey of a hat-trick, singlehandedly took Argentina through to the world cup.
