Could excessive use of mobile phones really lead to blindness? In this unusual case highlighting the importance of using mobile phones with caution, a 21-year-old Chinese woman lost the ability to see with her right eye, after playing a popular mobile game almost non-stop for several hours.

According to the report on oddity central, the woman, known as Wu, apparently noticed that she couldn’t see anything with her right eye on October 1st, while playing her favorite mobile game, King of Glory. Thinking she was just tired, she went to bed, but when she woke up the next day, she was still blind in her right eye. Her parents took her to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with a serious condition known as retinal artery obstruction. This usually only occurs in older patients, but doctors said that Wu’s eyes were incredibly fatigued by the stressed of constantly staring into the small smartphone screen.

According to the 21-year old woman, “During my days off, I would wake up at 6am, eat breakfast and start playing until around 4pm. I would stop and eat something before taking a short nap and continue playing until 1am or 2am. Sometimes, I would even be too lazy to stop and eat.” The young woman is still in the hospital, where doctors are trying to restore her vision, but, so far, they have made little progress. When flashing a light in her eyes, Wu still reported seeing nothing with her right eye.

It is difficult to conclude if prolonged exposure to the screen of the mobile phone alone could have resulted in blindness. Nevertheless, it may have contributed to any underlying conditions that may have predisposed the woman to blindness.

The use of smartphones and other electronic devices have inevitably increased with ongoing transition to a ‘paperless’ world. Many individuals (including kids) heavily rely on computers , tablets , phones and other devices for work , recreation, social interactions and communication.

Are you aware of how much screen time exposure you have daily? What can you do to reduce the impact on yur eyes? Consider the following suggestions:

Take frequent breaks- After some minutes of using the device, take time to relax the eye muscles. for example you can take 20 seconds to focus on distant objects (20 feet away) after 20 minutes. This is known as the 20:20:20 rule.

Blink often to moisten the eyes and prevent eye irritation. There is a tendency to blink less often when using devices. Therefore, consider scheduling this too. For example you could blink 10 times after 20 minutes of screen time exposure.

Eye fatigue, twitching and red eyes are suggestive of eye strain. you should consider a comprehensive eye examination to prevent further impact on your eyesight.
