The Africa code week is an annual event in Africa with the mission of empowering future generation with the coding skills they need to thrive in the 21st century workforce and become key actors of Africa’s economic development. Coding has been tipped as the new literacy of the digital age; a whole new language that all must learn to speak fluently and express themselves in the 21st century. Africa code week presents a great opportunity for the young generation to be introduced to the world of digital literacy.
Considering the growing number of young people in Africa and the growing global shortage in technical skills, education is one of the major way to transform Africa’s youth surge into a productive workforce, hence the need to promote digital skill development to improve their job prospect. Technology in its entirety is currently presenting Africa with the unique opportunity of fostering digital literacy and equipping the continents rising generation with requisite skills as well as global positioning to take laudable strides and to make a mark in the global space.
This year, the Africa code week will run officially from 18th — 25th October 2017 with a focus on two age ranges of 8–17yrs and 18–24yrs; Ages 8–17 will learn coding basics and how to use the Scratch programming language (developed by MIT lab) and they would learn to use the language to create their own animations, quizzes and games, while ages 18–24 will be introduced to Web Technologies using; HTML, JavaScript and CSS.
During the Africa code week, many schools, tech establishment, ICT hubs and partnering government agencies (both local and international) in the thirty-five (35) African countries currently participating will be hosting, funding and running these training. Simply go online and locate the nearest Centre to you as the training will be free.
Remember; No matter the industry or sector where you are currently engaged, you are surrounded by modern digital technologies and these all have the tendency to disrupt or are already disrupting your industry; hence the need for self-improvement and skills development.
Please, feel free to like, share and comment so that others may see this too. Thanks.....
