ANOTHER GOLD FOR UNILAG AS STUDENTS EMERGE CHAMPIONS OF NATIONAL MATHEMATICS COMPETITION

Idowu Abiola of the Department of Mathematics, University of Lagos has emerged overall winner of the 2010 National Mathematics Competition for University Students. UNILAG was represented by a team of four students drawn from the Department of Mathematics. Other members of the team are Jarrett Uchechukwu Augustine who emerged 4th, Omotoriogun Folarin Ojo who took the 8th position and Oladele Oluwatosin Seun, 10th position. With this result, UNILAG will represent Nigeria at the International Mathematics Competition scheduled for July, 2010 in Bulgaria.



Fifty six students from different universities in the country participated in the competition organized by the National Mathematics Centre, Abuja, from 7th to 13th February, 2010. The University of Ibadan came second while the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) emerged third.



The winning team, led by Dr. R. O. Okafor and Dr. J. O. Olaleru, presented their plaques and certificates of excellence to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adetokunbo Sofoluwe on Monday, March 08, 2010 in his office. The team promised to bring Gold from Bulgaria.



The Vice-Chancellor congratulated the team and urged them not to rest on their oars as the Bulgarian competition will be much tougher. He declared the University’s readiness to provide financial and moral support to ensure the team’s success
