BEWARE. IT IS SNAKE SEASON!

Heat waves and high temperatures make snakes such as cobras and black mambas to seek cooler places thereby bringing them close to humans.

SAFETY TIPS

1. Be sure windows are screened or netted if you prefer having them open for ventilation. Snakes are good climbers and can reach heights such as window level and crawl in.

2. Be sure your doors are regularly closed, especially if you live close to bushes or shrubs or in an area where snakes have been sighted. They are stealthy creatures and you wouldn't hear them glide in if your doors are routinely left open.

3. Avoid having your house cluttered with too much things you do not use. Do not create hiding places for creatures that like cool, dark or moist places such as scorpions and snakes.

4. Before sitting or lying down under trees, check the overhanging branches to be sure there are no snakes taking shade from the heat as well.

5. It could be dangerous, lying on the floor outside your house at night. Stings from insects, scorpions and centipedes are common. Just as bites from snakes, especially at night. Snakes and scorpions are nocturnal (active at night).

6. You're not the only one uncomfortable with the heat. Creatures such as scorpions and snakes are cold blooded and are restless when the external temperatures are higher than normal.

7. Be conscious of your environment, especially where you step, sit and lie down at night. A client went into her bathroom to bath and saw a snake coming out of the toilet receptacle.

8. Clear bushes round your house. They are perfect resting and hiding places for snakes. Call in experts to keep your house free from rats. Snakes usually hunt them for food and will follow them into your house.

9. Call in experts to treat your surroundings with snake repellents. A professional pest eliminator will ensure that rodents, reptiles and insects are kept at bay.

10. If unsure, do not confront snakes that came into your house. Some snakes such as the mamba and cobra are far too fast and have the capacity to strike at amazing speeds. Call in the help of a professional if possible.

11. Snake bites are usually on limbs (hands and legs). In case of a bite, tie up the region with a piece of cloth to stop the poison from reaching the heart. Use a razor or sharp knife to make an incision on the wound. Suck out and spit out the blood. Take the person quickly to a hospital.

Folks living in cities such as Abuja, with central sewage system should be watchful in their toilets. Snakes are good swimmers and are known to crawl through piping to toilet.
