If you're an average mother, you're likely to be engaged in a constant battle with your children on what constitute good food and what doesn't. They want the sweets, the sugary, greasy snacks, the ice creams, the soft drinks and likes. But you want them to eat a balanced diet, rich in nutrients that are essential for good growth and perfect health. The amazing battle can sometimes be fierce, each side firmly holding its entrenched position.

But, is there any correlation between your children's nutrition and their well-being? Nutritionist say “Good-food, is the building material your child's brain needs to grow and run properly” and that “Children who don't get adequate nutrition in their first few years of life are more likely to have problems throughout life. This includes low Intelligent Quotient, slower language, and motor development with poorer school performance.”

Every child needs a balanced proportion of essential nutrients in the daily food intake. The dietary balance must not be tilted too much towards any one food class. Protein is good, animal meat being a good source of it. Too much of it however is injurious to good health. Sugar dulls the brain and clogs the mind while undigested meat rots in the stomach resulting in general sickness.

In matters of dieting, it's important to teach your child moderation. Boys tend to overeat and girls tend to nibble every now and then. Both result to unnecessary, even harmful weight gain. Eating habits take time to form, so you deliberately and insistently nudge your child towards the good and away from the bad.

Some parent are lopsided in their child training programmes. For example, they pay much attention to school time but not to prayer time, they make much time of bed time but not of meal time. But the truth is that the child needs all these for a well-rounded personality development. Therefore, all must be carefully tended and established.

There is no point wasting time and resources to bring up a child to manhood only to have him cut off in the mid-life by the wrong eating habits formed over the years.
