Installing a new Aláàfin of Ọ̀yọ́ is a very elaborate process and it has many stages. Some of these stages are known to all as they are public while some others are so hidden and secret that they remain mysterious to many. One of the latter is the Royal Initiation and Covenant with the Ancestors done for the new Aláàfin of Ọ̀yọ́.







This process is so secretive and exclusive that few have even heard of its existence. In this piece, I will touch on it so you can have a very good idea on how it is done. And the explanation given in this piece was based on the one done by no other personality than the Aláàfin Of Ọyọ, His Majesty, Kabiyesi Alaiyeluwa Ọba Dr. Làmídì Ọláyíwọlá Atanda Adéyẹmí III.

The great king explained that this initiation is done in the following steps:


The Aláàfin is presented with three calabash bowls and he is to select one out of these three. The one that he picks is the one that will determine the nature, type and duration of his reign as the monarch and living reincarnation of Sango.
The calabash is then mounted on the traditional Ọranyan tray.
The Igbá Ayé (Calabash of Existence) is surrounded by the initiated women (Great Mothers of the Occult). These women are also the ones who conduct the rituals necessary for this process. They conduct these rituals at the Ọranyan Compound right inside the Palace (Aafin) of the Aláàfin. These Great Mothers hold powerful positions and each of them heads a compounding within the palace of the Aláàfin. For this specific initiation ceremony, the wives of former Aláàfins are the ones who conduct it.

There are more extensive details about this ceremony but it is open only to the Aláàfin and other initiates. So, it is a kind of classified information, like the Central Intelligence Agency will say. When the files are declassified, the other parts will be published on this same platform. But now, you have an idea of how the Aláàfin is initiated into the elite club of his forefathers.
