Located in the heart of Europe, Germany is bordered by at least 9 different countries;Poland and the Czech Republic to the east, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and France to the west, Switzerland and Austria to the South while the North Sea and the Baltic sea provide the country with maritime access to the north.

With a population of more than 82 million inhabitants, Germany is the second most populous country in Europe. It is the seventh largest country in Europe by land size. Germany is also Europe’s biggest economy and the fifth largest economy in the world by Purchasing Power Parity. The country is a key player in global politics and it is an important member of both the European Union and the United Nation.

1. LMU Munich


The Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU) of Munich was founded in 1472 and it is one of the oldest universities in the country. It counts no less than 34 Nobel laureates including the physicist Max Planck, Otto Hahn and Werner Heisenberg as part of its proud alumni.

LMU has the second-largest student population of any German university, and an estimated 13 per cent of the total student body is made up of foreign or international students.

2. Technical University of Munich

The state owned Technical University of Munich was established to focus exclusively on science and technology and engineering. However, overtime the university has expanded to offering degree courses in medicine, natural science agriculture and even the social sciences.

Since its inception in the 19th century, no less than 13 Nobel Prizes have been awarded to persons affiliated with the Technical University of Munich

3. Heidelberg University

Established in 1386, Heidelberg University is the oldest university in Germany and one of the oldest in all of Europe. The university is renowned and respected for its contributions towards various areas of knowledge including psychiatry, sociology, environmental physics and genetics.

The university’s alumni lists no less than fifty-six Nobel laureates including the sociologist Max Weber and Hannah Arendt amongst its ranks. About 20 per cent of the university’s student population is made up of foreign or international students with foreign students making up more than 30 per cent of research students.

4. Humboldt University of Berlin

Humboldt University of Berlin is one of the most respected universities in the world. For more than a century, the university has been at the center of ground breaking research and scientific discovery.

The university’s extensive library contains about 6.5 million books, thousands of journals and magazines and is considered as one of the largest in the world.

Some of the most famous figures in human history including Albeit Einstein, Karl Marx, Engels, and Max Planck are alumni of the Humboldt University of Berlin. In addition, at least 40 Nobel prizewinners are affiliates of the university.
