Ikpeazu Promises N1m Grant For Investment In Ranches, Animal Husbandry by Blue3k2: 1:58am On Dec 07
Umuahia – Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia has promised to give N1 million financial assistance to anyone that would invest in ranches and animal husbandry in any part of the state.

Ikpeazu said this on a live radio interview on Wednesday in Umuahia, adding that the gesture was part of government’s measures to discourage open grazing and the resultant clashes.

“I wish to state that this government will pay N1 million grant as incentive to anyone that would heed my call to set up a ranch or engage in commercial animal husbandry in Abia,” he said.

The governor advised the people of the state to revive animal husbandry which used to be a thriving agricultural venture in the state.

He charged the people to go into the rearing of local species of cows, goats, grass cutters and chicken, in order to increase the sources of meat protein and reduce reliance on beef.

He opined that establishing ranches would minimize clashes between herdsmen and farmers “as animals would no longer roam about in free range system.” Ikpeazu said that the anti-grazing bill, which is awaiting passage in the state house of assembly “will not on its own completely solve the problem of herdsmen/farmers conflict.”

He feared that the implementation of the law, might suffer some encumbrances just like similar laws in the country.

Meanwhile, the governor has charged Nigerians to “suppress their appetite for foreign rice” and embrace Nigerian-made rice.

According to him, there is no justification for Nigerians not to grow what they eat, saying that the country had the potential to achieve food security.

The Commissioner for Information, Mr Okiyi Kalu, who threw more light on the governor’s interview, said that the administration was passionate about reviving oil palm production in the state.

Okiyi told newsmen that government was working out incentives to encourage farmers to resuscitate oil palm plantation which, according to him, was the live wire of the economy of the defunct Eastern Region.

He described palm oil as “oil of peace”, saying, “aside from being a huge source of foreign exchange, it has never been a source of conflict or environmental degradation like crude oil.”

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the governor last year set up a committee comprising security agencies, traditional rulers, representatives of farmers’ associations, to regulate the activities of herdsmen vis-a-vis their relationship with their host communities.

The Commissioner of Police and chairman of the committee, Mr Anthony Ogbizi, told newsmen that the governor also promised to pay compensation to any farmer or herdsmen for damages suffered as a result of open grazing.

1m isn't that much but its better than nothing. Can 1 million buy a cow. His measure will pay off if he improves incentives. I see open grazing ban passing in Abia in 2018.

It is not about giving out the N1m. Abians needs to be educated on what ranching is all about through the state's ministry of agriculture by running some weeks features on it on TV. They should go to YouTube and watch how Kenya's Seed of Gold packaged urban diary farming, one will feel like going into diary farming the next day!

They should offer training to intending farmers transferring knowledge on best practices, how to formulate feeds, best breed for milk production, fattening techniques and innovative ideas such as hydroponics, where within a small space fodders are being grown for the cows then converting the cow dung generated in the ranch into cooking gas for the farmer and his neighbours.

It is beyond offering one million naira.

It is definitely a step in the right direction. It will at least create mini ranching, and kickstart a vibrant ranching sub sector in Abia- if properly implemented.

But the government has to do a more indepth cost analysis to make sure the N 1 million can take care of the livestock purchase, hay, irrigation, etc. The private sector, through tech innovation can also do a lot to reduce costs.

Politicaly, this will also give significant political cover to the move to eradicate the conflict-causing open grazing and forestall the unjust grazing reserves dream of some. If properly implemented it will also provide additional proof of success for people who are sceptical about ranching.

All in all. Great move that may in fact be the chrysalis of a new industry in Abia.

Lalasticlala come and see N 1 million business opportunity for entrepreneurs o!

It's a welcome idea only if the illiterate fulani herdsmen will embrace it. I keep saying this, u can call a lion a goat,...... lion will never eat yam but raw meat, same goes to these blood sucking herdsmen, most of them don't want peace because they have mission. Let's wait and see what happens next

Seriously, when the Igbos decide to enter into the business another tribe or people are known for, sincerely speaking, it means that the other tribe or people need to buckle up.

I have actually dreamt of when the Igbos will delve into this aspect of agriculture and business...

Please I want sincere reply. What is the possibility of the Igbos making exploit in this kinda business like the other ones they are known for?
