The Ballon d’or President: George Weah’s
rise to the Presidency
We have seen a lot of surprises in the world
of football such as players retiring to do a
totally different vocation like
artistry,medicine, acting, a few like Russia’s
Roman Pavuluchenko and Brazilian legend
Zico delved into politics but no time had an
ex International become president of a
country
Winning football matches wasn’t just Weah’s
speciality. The Liberian star has leaped
beyond success on the football pitch to
clinch the highest office in a political setting
through the ballot box. We look at Weah’s
surprising turn to politics and his remarkable
achievement of being the president of the
west African Nation Liberia
George Tawlon Manneh Oppong Ousman
Weah was born on 1st October 1966 in Clara
town slum of Monrovia one of the poorest
places in Liberia to Mr William T. Weah Sr
and Anna Quaye Weah
He was largely raised by his paternal
grandmother Emma Brown, he attended
basic school before becoming a switch
board technician for the Liberia
Telecommunications cooperation
Weah soon began his football career locally
playing in Liberia’s top football league. After
stellar performance he was signed by
Arsene Wenger in 1988 then Head Coach of
Monaco FC, France. Weah possessed
incredible talent and finishing dexterity that
he was recognised in 1989 when he won the
first of his three African Player of the Year
award. He caught the attention of Paris St
German. In the 1993/1994 season he won
the League 1 title and was top scorer in the
Champions League with 7 goals. He was
quick, strong, and deadly in front of goal. His
style of play was referred to as the
percussion for modern day forwards. He was
named African Player of the Year again in
94.
