In this video teaching Nigerian kids abroad how to play and blend traditional Igbo gospel music, traditional wooden flute called 'Oja' normally used in most Igbo cultural ceremonies was incorporated. Some people liked it, while some didn't. However, the Yoruba talking drums, gospel Fuji, and even traditional Yoruba 'Apala' music have become integral parts of modern day praise and worship in churches. My question is 'why are certain African traditional musical instruments like the wooden flute "Oja" demonized? Surprisingly it's demonized by the same Igbos who own it while they embrace instruments from other cultures.

Why can't we be proud of our African cultural heritage and don't treat it as inferior and demonic?

Watch the controversial 3 mins educational video produced by US-based Nigerian cultural promoter, Mr. Godwin C. Nwaogwugwu, to the end and let's know what you think.

I attended a Catholic Church in the east once where they played the oja and the ivory trumpet during consecration. The man playing the oja was wearing the striped floppy hat called okpu agu, and the man playing the ivory trumpet was dressed like a titled man, complete with red cap and eagle feather.

People who have a problem with that are just ignorant. The Christianity we practise contains pre-Christian elements that Europeans added to it before bringing it to us. Who said we too cannot add our own?

Nice video though. Thumbs up!!!! I watched it to the end.

Most Igbo harmless and colorful cultures are dead due to churches, just like the Igbo language is dying out slowly. Only the Catholic church embraces culture of their communities and still have Igbo mass sessions. Yorubas revere and respect their culture more, that's why even their traditional prayers/ curses like "die by fire" are now popular phrases in Pentecostal churches.... grin grin grin grin
