For 6 Months

Feeding of 40 sows for 6 months =
9000Naira * 40 Sows =
360000Naira / 40 sows /6 months

Feeding of 60 Porkers for 1 cycle
per Kg of Feed = 25 Naira
It takes approximately 7 months for a weaner to reach slaughter weight of 80 kg
If 1 porker will consume 1.2kg of feed daily for the first 3 months
1.2kg * 25 Naira = 30 Naira daily/ Animal

1 month = 30 Naira * 30 days =
900Naira / Month

3 Months = 30 Naira * 90 days =

50Naira * 120 days =
6000Naira/Animal / 4 months

Total cost of raising 1 porker for 7 months =
3 months ( 2700 ) + 4 months ( 6000) = 8700 Naira for 7 months

Hence cost of feeding 60 porkers is as follows
30 Naira daily per aimal * 60 Porkers for first 3 months

The Piggery Farming Business Plan in Nigeria

Pig farm is where you breed pigs for sale and providing pork. This is a very lucrative business all over the world. The good thing about pig breeding and rearing is that it’s not as difficult as other ranching practices and their food are easily available. The major thing a farmer should worry about is land.

PIG FARMING AS A LUCRATIVE BUSINESS IN NIGERIA

Pigs are kept in almost all the farms in Nigeria. It is still common to find pigs roaming freely around communities in rural areas of southern Nigeria than in the Northern parts due to religious taboo associated with pig farming. However, pig farming enterprises are also found in and around towns and cities in many areas of Nigeria, and stands a good lucrative source of income when properly managed like every other farming business.

Good pig farming in Nigeria relies on a combination of inter connected aspects such as housing, breeding and reproduction, nutrition, disease prevention & control and management; which are incorporated into intensive system of pig keeping to achieved a desirable and sustainable production. However, a blend of technical know how to make the right decisions at the right time, capital to provide improved building, feed and drugs, marketing viability to ensure that the animals have to be brought to the market when they have reached the desired weight and with optimum strategy for buying and selling of inputs (drugs, feed, farm facilities & equipment) and output (pork) with dependable sales outlet are key to sustainable income flow from pig farming.

PROFITABILITY OF PIG FARMING IN NIGERIA

NOTE: this is mainly for pig fattening aspect of pig farming.

A simple way to judge whether pig farming is profitable is by comparing the pork price (pig meat) and cost of production.

Assumptions (NB; Based on the available contemporary experience on pig farming)

• Average daily weight gain of 0.4kg
• Average daily feed consumption of 1.64kg from weaner to finisher of (50kg live weight in this case)
• Target live weight of 50kg
• Resultant pork from pig as 80% of its market weight
• Average feed price per kg of diet= #150
• Selling price per kg of pork= #1100
• Other costs(drugs and vaccine) = #1500
Hence,
• The pig would require 50÷0.4= 125 days to reach the target market weight of 50kg
• Total feed consumed throughout growth (125×1.64) = 205kg
• Total cost of feed consumed (205×150)= #30,750
Therefore Total cost of production = total cost of feed + other cost
= 30,750 + 1500
= #32,250
• Resultant pork = 80% of 50kg
= 35kg
• Cost price per kg of pork = 32,250÷ 35
= #806.25
• Selling price of pork per kg = #1,100
• Profit per kg of pork = selling price of pork per kg – cost price per kg of pork
= 1100 – 806.25
= #293.75
Therefore, you make #293.75 for every kg of pork meat!!

HOW CAN MORE PROFIT BE MADE?

While the above illustrations were ensured to be real as obtainable in pig farming. More profit can be made in the following ways:
• Ensuring improved housing to provide convenience to pigs to facilitate better growth.
• Employing good breeding practice by avoiding in breeding and ensuring selection of best animals in the herd for breeding
• Provision of good and well balance feed to your stock to ensure availability of nutrients for fast growth.
• Ensure a good disease control measure, to reduce cost through reduced medication (drugs) and to facilitate the animal’s utilization of nutrients for growth.
• Push to expand production, so as to enjoy more flexibility with economics of scale for production at lesser cost.

What is the current expenses for this year 2020?
Re: Profitability Of Pig Farming In Nigeria by piggynieria: 5:13pm On Apr 28, 2020
Caliph69:

You’re right. Pig business is expensive. Very expensive. Not trying to discourage anyone but that’s the truth. I am into it and i can tell you. All this his analysis is on paper. It’s different from what’s obtainable. I know how much i have put into it. And believe me for more than a year, i still handle most of the expenses from my money. The fact that good things don’t come that easy is what’s keeping me going. He never mentioned cost of the pens, water, Labour, transportation as you stated. And the feeding is not as cheap as he stated.

The more reason you need to start piggery business on own property rather than a rented farm building.

Availability of clean water where you don't have to spend more money pumping.....You can do that manually.

Once you stock your farm, you don't spend any expenses on transportation again except for yourself which should be reasonable enough.

Feeding should also be alternated with natural feed like vegetables, banana peels etc. Pkc and others ain't that expensive, you need to understand your feed formulation properly to achieve desired results.

However, vaccines, drugs and deodorizers decomposers might be on the high side but it's worth it. Disinfectants such as hypochlorite ain't that expensive.

Labor depends on the size of farm but I do encourage starters to start small and control farm size to a maximum of 3sows and 1boar. On the average, 8x3=24 and then chill until you have made enough money for expansion.

Lastly......... Beware of greed!

This task has been an easy one for me as I have improved from the 13 piglets in my first farrow to some robust 15 in this second farrow. My owner hopes I get to 20 soon lol grin... My babies will be up for grabs in few weeks on the usual first come, first served basis.. Thank you..

Hello

Nice write-up and an encouraging one. Piggery can be a rewarding experience, but in the long term. I have some observations and additions:

1. You didn't include the cost price of the pig which is around 5000-6000 for weaners and 12000 for growers.
2. You didn't account for cost of accommodation which averages 200 naira per month per pig.
3. Cost of attendant isn't included.
4. U said it takes 125 days or 4 months to achieve 50kg. In theory it's okay. In practical, it takes an average of 8 months from weaner age to attain 60kg.
5. Pigs require around 3kg of feed daily esp as they grow older
6. The cost per kg live weight is 420 naira as at today in oke aro. Outside farms sell for 470 thereabouts. Selling at 1100 means you are slaughtering and you then have to add 1500 as slaughtering cost minus the whole wahala of transporting, marketing etc.

From this, the profit of 10,281.25 per animal (35kg X 293.75) will have been decimated.

Pig farming can be a very rewarding experience but it's not a get rich scheme; it takes time and lots of it. If you aren't passionate, you will run in and run out as a lot of people have been doing.

Nigerians need to relook at their Local pigs and it's advantages

They are extremely hardy resist droughts and can thrive on very low quality feed and vegetation they don't need much housing a wooden shed covered with Taupalin would do they can be improved to increase the litter size but they are rugged and were built for the Nigerian factor of lack of funds ,housing and food They are happy just eating banana Leaves, weeds, poultry manure etc

In the Phillipines they have come to realise that raising local pigs is more profitable than raising exotic breeds because they do not need to eat expensive feed

this is a business i ventured into a while ago roughly 5yrs, it is a 24 hr. business and time consuming.
the main problems still associated with it is the mirage you will make money while doing it, definitely not that much,
reasons are, 1. lack of market exposure[2] taboo still associated with pig eating even when some fool are starving they will still not want to eat pig meat.
3] religious believes. etc
solution. [1] before venturing do your research and sort out your business account straight from the beginning.
2] garbage in garbage out, same as quality feed will give you robust result, PLEASE resist feeding cassava leftover to your pigs
3] the trick is sell your piglets at 3/4 months , we made more money selling early than wasting money to feed them for 1/2 years.
i can go and on but man is really busy now.
i have packed it in now but from experience next i start will be BIG PIG FARM.

Hello Oderemo. I would like to discuss business with you. How can I reach you please
