World renowned tennis player, Serena Williams, has opened up on the six weeks life-threatening complications following the birth of her daughter.
Williams tells the story of her medical ordeal in.
After a stress-free pregnancy, things unexpectedly turned perilous when she had to have an emergency C-section because the baby's heart rate was drastically dropping during contractions. After a successful C-section, her daughter, Olympia, was born on Sept. 1.
Williams revealed to the latest issue of Vogue, published Wednesday, that what trailed after her childbirth was far from smooth.
Williams unexpectedly felt short of breath the next day. She recalled in 2011, she had suffered a pulmonary embolism after a fall. As such, she had history of blood clots in her lungs and she had been taken off blood thinners just before delivery, so she did not waste time telling the nurses and doctors what to do.
Williams revealed how she walked out of her room while gasping for breath and immediately told a nurse that she needed a CT scan and IV heparin (a blood thinner).
However the doctors were not easily convinced. The nurse thought pain medication might be confusing Williams, while a doctor ordered only an ultrasound of her legs. When nothing was found, they ordered a CT scan.
It turned out Williams was right because there were several small blood clots in her lungs and a heparin drip was started within minutes.
The complications did not end there.
Williams told Vogue, the sutures on her C-section loosened due to her severe coughs from the clots in her lungs. It turned out that the blood thinner they had put her back on to save her life caused bleeding at the C-section incision site and a large hematoma had filled her abdomen.
Another surgery was immediately needed, and a filter was inserted into a major vein so that no more clots would find their way to her lungs. Subsequently, she wasn't able to get out of bed for six weeks.
Williams is not alone with her post-delivery nightmare.

Thank God for her life, and also thank God she came from that part of the world where village people don't exist but good responsive medical healthcare either. Bear in mind, even the rich also has their own portion of the struggles in life. "Shy na child birth wey some poor people dey drop year by year back to back.

I read that her ordeal was more like a racist one, she claimed the doctors didn't quickly attend to her because she was black and they were all white....

She backed up her claims with an article stating that maternal mortality is higher amongst blacks in the USA because of negligence....

Don't know how true it is tho
