SECRET DOCUMENTS REVEAL SEX ABUSE SCANDAL IN JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES CHURCH BY CRISTINA MAZA ON 1/10/18 AT 12:26 PM Source: http://www.newsweek.com/secret-documents-sex-scandal-jehovahs-witnesses-church-faith-leaks-776796 Thirty-three letters and internal documents, leaked Tuesday by the transparency organization FaithLeaks, expose a series of sexual abuse accusations against a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses church and the efforts the church made to cover up the scandal and keep it from the “worldly court of law.” The documents, written between 1999 and 2012, are communications between church leaders and the church’s legal entities, a group referred to collectively as Watchtower. They detail accusations of sexual abuse from three separate accusers. In 1999, a committee of church elders determined that the allegations of two young women who said their father had sexually abused them were true. One of the young women said she had been tied to a bed by her father and had her vagina examined for signs of masturbation when she was as young as five. The accuser’s sister also said her father had started to “handle and touch” her when she was only three years old. The woman also said she was repeatedly raped by her father between the ages of eight and 12. The young woman said her father would sit on her bed and cry and pray after raping her. “Our impression upon speaking with both girls was similar. That they are both quite rational. It certainly appears that these were real events,” the letter to Watchtower, 1 signed “with warm Christian love” from the Palmer Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses of Brimfield, Massachusetts, reads.  A woman attends a congress of Jehovah’s Witnesses. The church discouraged victims of sexual abuse from reporting the incidents to secular law enforcement officials. Nevertheless, the church leaders opted not to take action immediately because one of the accusers did not want to face her father 2 and make a formal complaint, an action required by the church’s judicial committee. An in-church trial was eventually held years later, which resulted in the temporary and brief excommunication of the father. The documents reveal that church leaders pressured the accuser and her husband not to report the abuse to secular law enforcement officials. Police had questioned the accused man, but official charges were never brought against him. The same man was also accused of raping another young woman who was not a relative. The church documents reveal that church elders doubted the woman’s credibility because she said her eyes were closed during the assault. The names of the accusers and the accused are redacted in the documents to protect their privacy. This is not the first time the Jehovah’s Witnesses church has been accused of sexual abuse. In 2014, a San Diego judge ordered Watchtower to award $13.5 million 3 to a man who was abused by a church leader when he was just seven years old. Six others also sued Watchtower because they had been sexually abused by the same church leader, but the cases were settled out of court. Palmer Congregation Sexual Abuse Investigation In 1999 accusations were made against a member of the Jehovah's Witness church. The accusations were made by one of his daughters to the leaders of the Palmer Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Brimfield Massachusetts. The following files document the various correspondences that took place within the Jehovah’s Witness organization as this case unfolded and was investigated by church leaders. The Documents span several years and they detail the accounts of the original accuser, another daughter, and a female not related to the accused that later came forward. andyoscar: Watchtower policies makes it possible and easy for pedophiles to be free within the congregations, endangering children. The policy is, when accusations of child sexual abuse is brought against an individual in the congregation, be it elder or Ministerial servant, there has to be two witnesses to the abuse or 2 witnesses to separate incidence. Then the accuser will have to face the abuser before the elders, when they can't do that, nothing will be done about it. The problem with the policy is, child sexual abuse happens when there are no witnesses. It can be a father with his son or daughter, a minor, it can be an uncle or a relative or even a Bible instructor conducting Bible study with a student. The point is, there are hardly any witnesses and this often involves minors, children around 6 years or less. When these are brought to the attention of elders, without two witnesses, or the abuser admitting to the crime, no judicial committee will be formed. Most times, kids suffering abuse will be threatened by the abuser or else something bad will happen. Kids are afraid and most times they will keep silence while their childhood is taken away from them forever. Now, Watchtower needs two witnesses for elders to act on child sexual abuse (which are rarely available), without that, the predator continues preying on same victims and other victims as well. Now, Watchtower has a policy of not reporting child sexual abuse to police. In the past, they will even disfellowship any jws who takes such a case to police for bring "disrepute" on Jehovah’s name and his organization, in some state where it is mandatory for religious leaders to report to police, they instruct the elders to make anonymous phone call from a paid phone giving anonymous tips and then leave the place (of course, such anonymous tips does nothing to assist). It is only recently that elders are instructed not to tell anyone not to report to the police . With such policies, abuser have free rein in the congregations and in the society in general. While you may not have two witnesses to child abuse, they are people that are well trained that can determine if an abuse had happened or not, but since watchtower are more interested in their reputation than in doing what is right, they will not report to the police.
