Sometime ago, we said even though, Culture is difficult to define, but it is the work environment we are supplied with, the moment we are in the work place. Culture is a powerful element, because it shapes the work environment, relationship and the unique work process. In what may be termed the global environment, people increasingly work together across culture, in spite of the lack of understanding of the underling difference that may intentionally or unintentionally inflict adverse opposition.

Often, people has come to assumed that working in the same place and speaking the same language, may come to mean having the same goals and objective. But it must be observed that while the goals and objective may be the same, but the partway to getting there often take different hazardous twist and turns. Make no mistake, in some cases, this may manifest in the increased level of frustration and stress in the process. Often time, this could even result in lack of motivation and productivity, and not the least, in the very misunderstanding that ultimately may affect the set goal and objective.

In the worst scenarios, any misunderstanding may affect the professional relationship or partnership, where either side of the parties may be left wondering or feeling perplexed of what must have gone wrong. Often time, most people resist any form of change in their core value and behavioral pattern overnight. Therefore, the need to building a cultural awareness skill, and sometimes, the resistance to this core value may decrease some of the issues that have the potentiality to damage business relationship which could have allow for smother transition when working across cultures. With such problems, here are some tips to increase productivity level as well as enhancing the communication skills across any cultural setting.

1. The disposition to clarifying issue of both verbal and non-verbal language is required. Because, what one may considered a forthright and honest- direct approach may turn out with the other to lose face, as to create distrust and strain in any future interaction.

And we must be aware of how we present any subject as we watch the body language of communication. Never assume to understand gestures, because, such gesture that may be acceptable to one culture may be an insult to another culture. Therefore more of verbal expression to explicate a non-verbal gesture is advised.

3. Avoid taking others mistake as a personal issue, like your team member, who might bring his or her own work style and perspective into the team work. This must serve as an opportunity to learn by asking for an explanation to understand the reason behind it rather than view it otherwise.

4. We must increase our awareness of preconceptions, because we all carry our cultural luggage of behavior, values and perspective of how we view the world and others around us. An increase awareness of preconception, may allow us to categorize situation and people around us at the same time. Because the more we are aware of our subjective view, the easier we might come to understand others with their differences. Often, this may ultimately assist to break the stereotype and of what one might take to be a false generalization about people and their cultural bias.

[b][/b]5. Recognize the principle of triple-AAA, which are Adaptation, Adjustment and Accommodation. Adapt in the new environment as you adjust your thinking and behavior to new circumstances in order to accommodate to meet up with the new expectation. With the triple AAA –principle, any crises situation can be defused as it provides an insight and facilitate to building a lasting relationship. It also can assist to understand what motivate you as it increases the capacity to communicate with confidence -

I believe culture does affect the way we work. For example, in Nigeria, we have a culture of being late for meetings, so everyone tends to be late for meetings. And I think that has affected how we conduct business. We do not start work on time because people are naturally late in Nigeria. Well, now I have to read an article to gather info about loss of innocence in to kill a mockingbird because I have been assigned a task from college to write an essay about this.
