The habit of nail-biting usually starts from childhood and when the habit is not broken, it could progress into adulthood. Nail biting, just like sucking on the fingers isn’t healthy and it is harmful in many ways, it makes the skin around the nails sore, disrupts nail growth and there’s also the exposure to harmful germs, bacteria, and viruses that could be lurking under the nails.

Here are some helpful tips to help stop the habit of nail-biting.

• Trim your nails.

When your nails are trimmed short there is less temptation to feast on your nails. Always get your fingers trimmed short on a regular basis by yourself or let a professional do it.
• Get a manicure. Give your nails a stylish new look regularly. You should be able to resist spoiling your perfect manicure by biting your nails knowing you spent some bucks getting your nails done.

• Keep your hands busy.

Throw yourself into an activity that would ensure that would task your hands and keep them away from your mouth. It’s only when your hands and mind is idle that you are likely to start biting your nails.

• Identify triggers.

Pay attention to whatever is making you bite your nails consciously or unconsciously, it could be boredom, anxiety, stress, depression, whatever, identify these things and you are on your way to avoiding these triggers and solving the issue of nail-biting.

• Stop.

Here is the most important part, the need to stop! Whatever it takes, just stop yourself from taking your fingers to your mouth. This you can achieve by being mindful, noticing things around you rather than zoning out and deal with your triggers.
