The doctrine and practice of tithing (i.e giving 10% of ones income to God) which has been an accepted practice in most Christian churches and ministries has recently come under strident attacks in both the social and news media. The attacks and criticisms are so serious that some of the critics are presenting tithing as a scam and advising Christians to stop tithing altogether. However, a close examination of the criticisms and attacks on tithing in the light of the scriptures shows that none if them is tenable. The arguments of the critics reveal their shallow knowledge of the Bible in general and the particular scriptures they are basing their case upon. Their attacks is reminiscent of Satan’s frontal attacks of God’s laws that slanted in the Garden of Eden (Gen. 3: 1-24). The goal is always to confuse and deceive man into disobeying God’s commandment and suffer the attendant consequences. God’s order of one man, one woman marriage has been seriously attacked and now tithing is being challenged. The purpose of this write up is to make a case for present day tithing by debunking the arguments of the critics and presenting the truth about tithing all from the Bible.

CRITICISIMS OF TITHING:
(a) Tithe for Alcohol The attacks on tithing was flagged off with the absurd teaching that people should rather buy alcohol with their tithe and drink it in the church. The ‘Apostles’ of this doctrine quote Deut. 14:22-26 as their authority. This is a clear case of ignorant people wresting scriptures to their own destructions as Peter put it in 2Peter 3:16. All those who teach and applaud this absurdity are only displaying their ignorance of the background of both the scripture they are quoting and the whole counsel of God on the subject of tithing and alcohol. One does not need to waste valuable time discussing this issue than to say that the standards of righteousness and the economic environment in ancient Israel is very different from what it is today. It is simply not applicable to this age. There is no Biblical sense in picking a scripture at random isolating it from its background and context and applying it without any reference to other scriptures on the same subject. That is how not to interpret and apply any scripture. People who love to drink alcohol should stop seeking to use the church as their venue or tithing as their cover. (b) Flamboyant Lifestyle of Some Pastors Another platform from which tithing is being criticized is that some Pastors are using their members’ tithes to live flamboyantly while the tithing members are struggling with poverty. The fact that some Pastors are misusing tithes paid in their churches does not negate the fact that there are also many Pastors and churches operating with the highest integrity and accountability. Jesus warned us in Matt. 7:15-20 to beware of false prophets and predicted in Matt. 24:11,24 that there will be many of them in these last days we are in. He also gave the clue that by their fruits we shall know them. The existence of such irresponsible false preachers is no reason to generalize and condemn all pastors and the tithing. After all the existence of a financially irresponsible Judas Iscariot (John 12:4-6) among the disciples of Jesus did not dent the integrity of Jesus and the other disciples. It did not hinder them from accomplishing their mission either. People should heed the warnings of Jesus and not allow themselves to be cheated and deceived by false prophets manifesting bad fruits. (c) Tithing Ended with The Old Testament The more serious attack on tithing is that it ended with the Old Testament and is not taught in the New Testament. This is a serious misrepresentation of the scriptures. Tithing did not start with the Old Testament laws and therefore cannot end with the Old Testament. It actually started with Abraham over 400 years before the law of Moses and co

In the Old Testament, their blessing were tied to their tithes!

Malachi 3:10
Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith,
saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing,
that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

In the New Testament our blessings are all in Jesus Christ.
Notice it says ALL not some but ALL.

Ephesians 1:3
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:

In the Old Testament, God rebuked the devourer (Devil) when you tithed.

Malachi 3:11 (KJV)
And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground;
neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts.

In the New Testament, Jesus Himself destroys the works of the devil.

1 John 3:8
For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

The bible say's that the New Testament is better than the Old Testament.
Not only is the New Testament is better than the Old Testament,
Its also based on better promises

Hebrews 8:6
But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant,
which was established upon better promises.

So please why do we want to hold on the Old Testament's tithing when the New Testament's grace is better

Read Acts Chapter 15 and tell us how this so called pastor is not like one of those confusionists in the early church trying to propagate Judeo-Christianity...i.e. mixture of Judaism and Christianity.
