9 is no evil number. Apple released iPhone X alongside iPhone 8 and 8 plus to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the iPhone. There are rumours and supposedly leaked details of an iPhone 9 but the company might just skip to iPhone XI since iPhone X already exists. Corporations are not driven by superstitions and happenstances.

9 is considered unlucky in Japan, but like you've said, the naming for the new iPhone had its reasoning. Same with Windows 8 to 10.

However, I recall something about why OnePlus jumped from the 3T to 5, seeing as 4 is unlucky in China.

Then of course, the missing 13th floor in elevators in many buildings.
