FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION

Female genital mutilation (FGM), otherwise known as to as female circumcision (FC) is a usual practice common in some parts of African and Arab countries. It has come with some stiff resistance lately is suddenly in the spotlight and under fire in the West. Though FGN is incorrectly called female circumcision.

FGN comprises of the activities of cutting away part of the prepuce, or hood of the clitoris, and sometimes the tip itself; removal of the entire clitoris as well as the labia minora (inner vaginal lips) and the cutting back of the labia majora (outer vaginal lips).

Pros and Cons of FGN

The primary focus of this act is to make understand that a female is a virgin before she gets married.

It reduces the female ability to experiment and / or experience sexual pleasure after marriage. The urge to engage in sexual activities is reduced or to a zero level of tolerance. And it thereby reduces the act of sex before marriage as most culture in Nigeria frowns at the act.

During consummation of the holy matrimony, it brings the respect and confidence in the family of the bride and the understanding that our child (the bride) is a virgin. The African, especially Nigeria culture hinges on this aspect of the socio-cultural life. The Yoruba tribe from South West Nigeria in its primitive era promotes this act and normally calls this when the virginity is intact. The puncture of the hymen known in their indigenious language as “ibale” by the groom on the night of the wedding day is held important. Where the bride is deflowered, the bride will be referred to as0 “apere ajadi”.

It also help to increase and promote the discipline of marital fidelity. Such rampant act and considered amoral behavioural is infidelity and the society frowns at such act.

There are cons to it which are but not limited to the following:
Negative effect on self-esteem and sexuality
Pelvic and urinary tract infections
Interference with a female's ability to have a normal vaginal delivery.

How to stop Female Genital Mutilations

Let raise the aware via our social media and local media available:
Currently there is a campaign with an hash tag #EndFGM on twitter. Much of this campaigns are needed via other means available. Individual social media handlers can help promote this awareness. Let’s stop this barbaric act with a strong worded campaign.

Government and NGO's collaboration:
The government of each country should help raise the awareness and education and as well as making frantic effort to collaborate with non-profit making and voluntary organisations to help raise the awareness it.
This also comes with effort to promote the campaign against it by educating mothers-to-be who visit hospitals and maternity centers for their ante-natal care.
