The Olympic Winter Games opened Friday in South Korea as doping controversies resurface. There is the Russian file, of course, this report on cross-country skiing which states that 290 athletes presented "abnormal" blood data between 2001 and 2010. The sports authorities explain that the control procedures are heavy and that it is impossible to monitor everyone. This might change: a team of researchers at the University of Waterloo has developed a new, faster, and much cheaper technique.

A urine and blood test now takes about thirty minutes and costs several tens of dollars per sample. With this new technique, one minute is enough for a few dollars. "We could control every athlete every day," say researchers at the University of Waterloo, who developed it.
