UEFA president, Aleksander Ceferin has said that the Video Assistant Referees (VAR) will not be used in European competition next season even if they are approved by FIFA to be used in Russia 2018 World Cup.

Ceferin while speaking at the 42nd UEFA Congress in Slovakia Monday, said the VAR will not be used in the Champions League and any other European competitions.

He said that he is not against the use of VAR as it is the way to go if certain ugly aspects of officiating are to be sanitized, but called for more time for referees and fans education before it is implemented.

Ceferin has constantly questioned whether introduction of VAR is premature following a string of controversial cases throughout Europe and called for more research before allowing the system in the Champions League.

FIFA president, Gianni Infantino has been leading the drive towards VAR being used at the World Cup but in January said the move could prove counter-productive if the problems with the system are not solved on time.
