Did you know that your application typically gets between 10-15 seconds in front of a recruiter? if between this time frame the recruiter is not impressed, your application will most definitely be tossed to shreds therefore it is very important that you have a stellar application that will not only catch the eye but also impress along the line.

Here are 5 possible reasons why your application has not gone past the recruiter's desk:

1. TOO MUCH INFORMATION: Including too much information that is unrelated to the job is a waste of space and could be harming your chances of getting a job. A recruiter does not need to know your height, weight, religious or political affiliations etc. Learn to be direct and straight to the point both in your curriculum vitae and in your cover letter.

2. BEING TOO GENERIC: The recruiter will know if you are using a "one size fits all " cover letter/CV and they certainly won't be impressed. Learn to customize each cover letter and or CV for a specified job description. A master template can be used for an outline but remember to tailor it.

3. WEIRD EMAIL ADDRESS: Certain email addresses give an instant negative perception of a candidate and also make you look unserious. Avoid using sexy, cutie, hot etc as part of your email address, just stick to your first name. It would be a shame to fail at the first screening because of a ridiculous email ID.

4. WRONG SPELLING AND GRAMMAR: There are no excuses for this, just one grammar mistake or spelling error and your application may be on it's way to the trash bin. Review your curriculum vitae, cover letter and resume again and again before sending it out. A great way to review your work is reading it out loud to get a feeling of what it sounds like and if it doesn't sound right, it most likely isn't right. Do not also make the mistake of using the wrong company name or job title.

5. UNTIDY LAYOUT: Alot of prospective candidates do not take the time to properly organize their application letters or curriculum vitae in a way that is appealing to the eye. They do not include punctuation marks, paragraphs or spaces where necessary to produce an attractive result. Gone are the days where your CV must follow a certain pattern, be creative with your write ups and designs.
Another set of people just copy and paste their CV and cover letters directly to the mail forgetting that it is meant to be an attachment.
Lastly, each mail you send must contain a subject.

I hope these useful tips guide you in your job search.

If you want to save yourself the stress of not being sure and avoiding mistakes, get yourself a professionally written CV, cover letter or resume and business plans at a ridiculously affordable price.
