Italian Serie A has announced that its summer transfer window will now close on August 18 a day before the start of the Serie A.

Serie A’s extraordinary commissioner Giovanni Malago made the confirmation stating also that the winter transfer window will end before the championships resumes on January 20 after winter break.

The decision for the change in Serie A is an offshoot of the English Premier League whose clubs decided to bring the transfer deadline forward to August 9 before the season gets underway.

Malago revealed that the league will schedule fixtures on December 26 and would stage two rounds of matches between Christmas and New Year, again following the Premier League model. However, there will then be a three-week winter break in the Italian top flight.

The decision therefore means clubs will have to ensure that they sign any player before the beginning of the season unlike when player could join clubs even when the season begin before the end of August.
