So while driving car gives a very faint click, just ignored and turned up stereo, but then got to the base of a hill where there's a check point, went through and barely 50m away car RPM suddenly rises and drops, then car goes off.
Cranks but won't start. Crank sound is now different.
No check engine light before now.
Opened engine oil refill cap, top timing chain isn't rotating; engine uses 2 chains, one for camshafts and another chain for crankshaft and oil pump.
When trying to start car the crankshaft turns for fraction of a second.

What could the fault be?

Since its Nissan, I humbly bow out....

a Nissan? No synchronisation between camshaft and crankshaft. Timing is off already. Apart from clicking noise ignored what other sound did you hear any? Is this a DOHC?

Nope, upon close inspection timing chain is intact.

Didn't have to... Removed valve cover to look into it and everything was intact.

if you are certain, then let me try again.

I am assuming you have checked the usual.

So let me target the unusual.

Excessive carbon deposits in valve area, causing loss of compression.

Modified:

It will explain this

. Crank sound is now different.

Went under the car while someone else tried to start it. Saw that flywheel and torque converter were turning, but engine wasn't.

Looking closely, the engine must have given signs that something was wrong.

Looks at the markings caused by contact between the flywheel and possible engine area.

Must have squeeked intermittently.

It's either that? Or you have been driving your 1.1liter engine assuming it is a V8 5.7liter engine

You don't need to buy a new key. All you should do is to hook it up to VAG or ODIS to check the error on the Messy system. Then you can do an online update/reprogram of the key.
