Anambra Folks And Why They Love Themselves Like Other Igbo ...how True Is This ? by AmuDimpka: 4:59pm On Mar 16, 2018
I'm surprised to see many Igbo folks, especially those who aren't from Anambra, expressing surprise on the posts made by Mbe Nwaniga recently on rich private Igbo men who are building roads for their communities and providing other amenities.

It's not new in a place like Anambra State at all!

As far back as the late 80s and 90s, Ọka-etiti people who are neighbors to Nnobi were competing in building roads around their neighborhoods. I remember growing up around there to see how when you say someone is very rich, you'd be asked, “ọ lụọna ilo?” or “kedụ ilo ọ lụụ?” (Has he built a road or which road has he built?) Ọka-etiti rich men competed among themselves in road constructions no matter the kilometer. Today, driving around Ọka-etiti, you'd see roads done with nylon coal tar — those designs that are silvery in color and more durable. They're not wide because there weren't as much car owners as now. Surprisingly, businessmen who had little or no education were the ones doing these feats back then.

Around late 90s and early 2000s, Emeka Ọfọ embarked on massive road constructions in his Ọraifite town in Anambra too. By then, Onicha-Owere expressway was a mess and those who would want to access Ọnịcha or Ihiala or Owere from Nnewi, Ichi, Nnobi, etc would have to use Ọraifite to do so. Emeka Ọfọ built them solidly as at then with lots of bumps that you'd hardly speed for the safety of his people back home. He also put barricades to keep long trucks and heavy duties away from the roads.

Around same time, Emma Okonkwọ (Bishop) embarked on massive road construction in his small town of Ichi, a neighboring town to Nnewi. Hardly would you drive around Ichi and see dusty roads. The road networks done by the man so beautified the small town that you'd think the place is a GRA if you are blinded to see the few mud and old houses around. Plus others.

These days, many have taken a cue from those earlier examples and it's not a new development in Anambra State at all, as far as I'm concerned.

Ifeanyị Ụba, Obi Jackson, Godwin Madụka etc are newcomers and have actually taken it a notch higher. Plus many other young men of their generation we are most grateful to such gestures and other philanthropic gestures.

Take note: These men were never in government and never held political power or looted the public treasury.

Such men are the reason why Anambra people are proud to come from that State and are quick to say “A bụ m onye Anambara”.
