Kenya Has Two Weeks to Decide Whether to Regulate Cryptocurrencies

Kenya’s Treasury Secretary has been tasked with the responsibility of investigating the recent state of cryptocurrency adoption in the country, which has so far been growing with no regulations. In a couple of weeks, he is to give his report to parliament, advising them how to move ahead with regulating cryptocurrencies.

The Kenyan parliament has reportedly given Treasury Secretary Henry Rotich two weeks to chosen whether cryptocurrencies need to be regulated, Business Daily Africa reported on Wednesday.

The Finance and National Planning Committee questioned Rotich about the use of bitcoin in the country. particularly, the committee asked “why the Treasury and the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) allowed people to venture into the unregulated cryptocurrency space without being licensed to operate and taxed.

Rotich admitted that there is a lot of interest in cryptocurrency, adding that he will look into whether there are crypto exchanges operating in the country. So far, “I am not aware of people operating locally…But I will ensure to find out whether we have local exchangers.

London School of Economics Launches “Cryptocurrency Investment and Disruption” Course

The London School of Economics, one of the leading academic institutions for higher learning in the world, is the biggest university to offer a course on cryptocurrency. For just £1,800, and about sixty hours of learning, you too can be a approved crypto academic.

The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) has launched a new online authorize  course titled “Cryptocurrency Investment and Disruption” headed by Dr Carsten Sørensen, Associate Professor of Information Systems and Innovation. Philippines Embraces Cryptocurrency: Exchanges Issued Provisional Licenses

The Philippines Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (CEZA) made known it granted three cryptocurrency exchanges provisional license to operate. All three are foreign-based, including two from Hong Kong and one from Thailand. To gain yearly authorization, companies made substantial financial and employment investments in the country.

“These are offshore companies, and they have committed investments of $1 million each,” stated Raymundo T. Roquero, deputy administrator of the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (CEZA) in the Philippines.

He was speaking specifically of the conditions under which three licenses have been given to crypto exchanges, such as the first to Hong Kong’s Golden Millennial Quickplay Inc. Ltd. (GMQ), and how the recently licensed firm “intends to build infrastructure in Sta. Ana, Cagayan,” he told Anna Leah E. Gonzales of The Manila Times, “and will have an incubation period of two years, so they are already allowed to operate here in Manila.”

With three exchanges being licensed, that means $3,000,000 will be added to the coffers of the government-owned and controlled corporation formed in the Ramos era. The CEZA encapsulates the city of Sta. Ana. The area is considered prime development, and is positioned in an effort to achieve the Trans-Pacific sea lanes. The hope is to capitalize on trade with APEC while also remaining accessible to international trade.

All three exchanges are from outside the country. Each licensed exchange must be renewed yearly. The news is most welcome for the crypto community, for only two weeks ago, CEZA claimed it would put budding exchanges hoping to do business in the country through extraordinary paces. The $1,000,000 is to deter such exchanges and the zone from becoming initial coin offering meccas.

Canadian Crypto Exchange Coinsquare to Launch in Japan

Canadian cryptocurrency exchange Coinsquare has made known its plan to enter the Japanese market pending authorization by the country’s financial regulator. The new exchange will be launched under the Dlta21x brand. It will focus on Japan initially but has plans to extend into other Asian markets.

Coinsquare made two proclamations on Tuesday. One is the official launch of Coinsquare Licensing to “enable domestic and international businesses to offer a digital currency trading solution powered by Coinsquare’s technology.” The company also disclose that it has already partnered with some businesses in the EU and Canada to launch white-labeled platforms.

The other proclamation is its plan to enter the Japanese market using Coinsquare Licensing. The launch will be in cooperation with Dlta 21 Blockchain Corp (Dlta21), formerly Protos Blockchain Corp. According to the companies.

Founded in 2014, Coinsquare gives the trading of BTC, BCH, ETH, LTC, DOGE, and DASH. The exchange claims to be “Canada’s most secure digital currency trading platform,” with a “95% cold storage policy on all digital currency.” The firm also owns Coinsquare Mining with operations in Québec.

Russia Now Has a Registry of Whitelisted Crypto Companies

The Russian Association of Cryptocurrencies and Blockchain has created a registry of whitelisted companies that offer crypto-related products or services. At the same time, the bill to regulate cryptocurrencies in Russia has been  held up.

The Russian Association of Cryptocurrencies and Blockchain (RACIB) has created a whitelist of crypto companies. The list contain companies in the field of crypto mining, investment, marketing, legal, training, and initial coin offerings (ICOs).

From early this year, legal entities and individuals in Russia have lost more than 270 million rubles [~US$4.3 million] from crypto-related investments organized by scammers and incompetent companies, RACIB detailed. The association has already started tracking unfair ICO projects and it hopes the registry will allow industry participants to find trustworthy partners in the space. RACIB expand.

The association made clear that the registry “consists exclusively of organizations that have undergone voluntary verification of dependability.” The criteria include “financial sustainability, experience and business reputation, lack of judicial judgments, availability of licenses and certificates (if necessary), [and] no arrears of taxes and fees.”

Iran Considers Using Cryptocurrencies to Evade US Sanctions

Iran might employ cryptocurrencies as part of its efforts to circumvent the upcoming US sanctions, according to a high-ranking Iranian lawmaker who said the matter will be discussed in parliament soon. The Iranian MP also believes that digital money can help to defeat the hegemony of the US dollar.

Cryptocurrencies are one of the biggest mechanisms Iran can use to evade the new US sanctions, a senior Iranian lawmaker said in an interview published currently. Mohammad Reza Pour-Ebrahimi, chairman of the parliamentary Economic Commission, also noted that digital currencies could help get rid of the dollar hegemony in international trade. Speaking to the Mizan News Agency, he said the matter will soon be reviewed in the parliament of the Islamic Republic.

Pour-Ebrahimi also noted that one of the first concern of the Iranian legislature, in the recent volatile economic situation, would be to explore the issue of money treaties as another mechanism to evade the sanctions. “Today, many countries like Russia, China and Brazil have already turned to mutual or multi-national money treaties which facilitate trade transactions,” he made clear.

Samsung Stores in the Baltic States Now Accept Cryptocurrencies

On Friday, Samsung stores in the Baltic States have made known they will be accepting seven different cryptocurrencies for merchandise. Through a partnership with the payment processing company Coppay, clients shopping at the Samsung stores in Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius, and Kaunas will be able to pay with BTC, ETH, DASH, NEM, STEEM, XRP, and LTC.

The platform Coppay is a European fintech company that offers payment gateways for cryptocurrency paying customers throughout 31 merchant locations. Now the firm has made known that Samsung is truly embracing its slogan to “Turn on Future” by accepting seven different cryptocurrencies. The digital currencies the Samsung stores will be accepting for payments include bitcoin core (BTC), dash (DASH), NEM (XEM), steem (STEEM), ripple (XRP), litecoin (LTC), and ethereum (ETH).

“Customers in Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius, and Kaunas can buy Samsung smartphones, tablets, laptops, TV-sets, and more with digital money,” explains Coppay’s announcement.
