All bodies of water freeze in winter around February and don't melt until mid-April.
Sea and lakes become skiing and ice skating grounds. People go for walks when the weather is good.

It was sunny so I went out there and took some photos. Later I heard a man died near the same area. He went skiing, went too far out where the ice is thin, the ice broke and he fell through.

I don't know if you die by freezing or drowning when that happens.

A walkway bridge between islands. Ice is thin under the bridges where the current is strong, better not go there.

There were many ski tracks.

Sunset, frozen swamp and reeds on the shores of an island.
Swans, ducks and other sea birds nest there in spring so no one touches the reeds.
There are seaside swamps like that even in the city.

what are you doing in Finland. Nigerians everywhere
Re: Finland- Frozen Sea (photos) by pansophist(m): 10:48pm On Mar 24, 2018
Haaaa Finland, a lovely country indeed.

I lived in Lapland for 3 years. The region is one of nature's marvel. I experienced Midnight sun, the northern lights, fished in frozen lakes, skate on frozen rivers, and wandered away in km of forest. Sweden was closed by and I bike there to shop. Memories.

But it is incredibly boring, lonely, dark and depressing. During winter, you would be lucky to have brightness for five hours a day. If not that there are foreigners around, and that we could travel out frequently, man for don run mad. Nevertheless, nature in the Nordic is a marvel.

I'm not Nigerian but there are Nigerians here. I had a Nigerian software engineer colleague at my old workplace. I work for a big corp. There are students, prostitutes, African shop owners from Nigeria!

No daylight there in winter tho. 4-5 hours in Helsinki if you are lucky.
I like the dark and cold, since that forces me to get writing done, if it was sunny and warm I'd be out in all my free time and get nothing done smiley

I love the nature here, and the quiet.

Do you like living in Finland? be honest tongue

As you're an American, I assume that the Finnish lifestyle is an antithesis to what you're used to. It was for me, but it gave me a different perspective about different cultures and quite surprisingly, I prefer such lifestyle. But I will never like cold weather though.

I lived in the hot semi-desert of the south. I was very unhappy with the materialistic consumerist culture, hostile work environments, complete lack of security and safety, exorbitant healthcare costs and other things. There are a few American migrants here, none of them ever want to go back. We are all super happy with the laid back, nature-friendly life here. It's a real paradise for nature and outdoors lovers like me. I can go camping without worrying about my safety. Cold weather isn't too bad if you do winter sports or keep busy doing creative work indoors. A lot of mediterranean people go crazy here, they don't stay too long cause they get bored and depressed.

Oh, I see the angle you are coming from, and I agree with you. Finland is exactly what The USA could be, and even better since its one of the richest country on the planet. But with its gun laws, healthcare issues, politicians etc, The USA is definitely not for me.

I don't mind the cold in Finland if there are some compensations such as proximity to other countries without necessarily having to fly expensively. I live in the Netherlands also and even if the weather is comparable to Finland (it rains and its windy a lot), I can drive to Belgium in less than an hour, Train to Paris in about two hours, Germany, Luxembourg, just everywhere in Mainland Europe, and flights from here are cheap as hell.

Enjoy Finland smiley

Police brutality is a big issue too. I feared for my life whenever they stopped me in traffic, you never know.
Also being close to all the European cities is great. I visited here first time in 2005 and totally fell in love, spent most of my vacations in Finland until I was able to make the move. Also we get hell of a lot more vacation time.
Never been to the Netherlands, but I have some friends there, I should visit for sightseeing sometime. I hope you are happy there, it's a great hub location if you love traveling.

Was in Kemi , Oulu , Tornio and Haparanda( Sweden) The first day I got to Kemi it was so quiet I thought I was in another planet.
It’s a boring depressed place but it’s good for people who want to stick to themselves or introverts.

Netherlands is beautiful and most people speak good fluent English unlike many European countries. The wind can make the place freaky cold during the autumn and spring.
I enjoyed visiting the Red light, I was able to watch live porn for 2 euro smiley though wasn’t up to 5 min tongue

The issue of police brutality has become so mainstream in the media (thanks to BLM), that I assume it to be uncommon, it would be sad to think it is still an issue. I actually love living in the Netherlands, my only wish was for the social system be like the Nordic model. Finland (and the Nordics) is heaven when it comes to taking care of citizens.

When I studied there, I got a free laptop, 500 euros monthly when I went for exchange even though the tuition was free, and I was on a student visa. Which country can beat that? and the most complimentary part of it was that student visa was a path to naturalization. All my friends that stayed are Finnish now, making me jealous grin

And it is so flat here, there are no mountains, hills, lakes like it is in Finland. Winter here has almost no snow, just grey. So yea, each country has its own merit. And if you ever visit NL, let me know. I can give some recommendations.

I lived in Tornio actually. By bike, it was 5 mins to Haparanda, Sweden. And yes, NL is beautiful. I m always in awe when I bike around the canals at night, as the street lamps illuminate through the canal. After experiencing all these, I got pissed at Nigeria the more, it is all what we could become, but chose not to.

I've been to Kemi for only one day, it is a tiny little boring town. I haven't been to Tornio yet but planning to go there and cross to Sweden. Those places are great for introverts indeed. Kemi has the ice castle in winter, I should go see it sometime.

Well, you should go see Tornio someday. It’s nice looking at the border boundary between Tornio and Haparanda and watch how your time Changes within a second of crossing to 1 hr difference and you can make use of IKEA at Haparanda near the border but I guess you have to change your Euro to Swedish Krona.

No offence but I don’t think Nigeria can attain to that in next Century.
