Calls For Dethronement, Condemnations Trail Yoruba Oba’s Adoption Of Emir Title by ewuzie7: 5:59pm On Apr 01, 2018
Hours after a traditional ruler of Iwo town in Osun state, the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi declared his resolve to drop his Oba title and adopt Emir, the development has caused controversy and intense subject of concern among the people of the state.

Concerned discussants of the traditional ruler's strange decision on social media, most of whom are Yoruba indigenes, have condemned the adoption of the Emir title saying Oba Akanbi was dragging Yoruba culture to the mud.

Some of these critics demanded that the monarch be dethroned by the state government.

In a statement made available by the Yoruba Council of Youths Worldwide (YCYW) on Saturday, Oluwo's decision was described as embarrassing to Yoruba people and culture.

The President of the Yoruba Council, Aremo Dotun Hassan who released the statement said Oba Akanbi should be stripped of his 'Oluwo of Iwo' stressing that Akanbi's decision is a monumental taboo.

According to the Yoruba Council of Youths, " It has come to our notice that His Royal Majesty Oba now turned "Emir" Abdulrasheed Akanbi Teluwo, The renamed Emir of Iwo Kingdom has succeeded in dragging the obaship ethos into the mud of disgrace by changing history today 31st March, 2018. We laconically frowned at these monumental errors and unpardonable damage to our common patrimonial heritage.

"Alas, we believe there is more to this new premodial trend. We hope this is not clandestinely motivated to annex the entire Yoruba Land with the then declaration by the North claiming ownership of the whole of Nigeria as their property, and throw us (Yorubas) into the dungeon of slavery.

"This sacrilageous and treacherously motivated acts could be likened to the woes brought by Afonja to the ilorins in kwara state, considering the current state of the nation, emersed in trouble waters in the face of sporadic invasions and threats by the Hausa Fulani's hegemony to takeover our land via wanton killings and destruction of lives and properties.

"We see this diatribe as a postulated script towards the fruition of this evil agenda, under the preconceived ideas and misguided yoke of promoting Islam and Northern alliance, which predicated upon the conspiracy of silence handwriting seen on the wall, we cannot isolate and absorb the Government of Osun State from these ineptitude and unfettered myths of oppression and subjugation by Northern interest against the sovereign rights of the (Yoruba people) Southern parts of Nigeria, by ensuring to forcefully annex us through this ill motivated crafted means of taken over our land.

"It is rather heartbroken to see a our common heritage been robbed and slaughtered without caution by the new Oba Oluwo, whose antecedence ever since his assumption as the Oluwo of Iwo has succeeded to bury our eternal "isese" traditional practices via burning down of all major shrines and deities of the Iwo kingdom in a Pharaohic style.

"However, by this singular embarrassing acts by the  Oluwo, we call on the Iwo Council of Obas, Osun State Council of Obas and All Obas of Yoruba Land to call the Oba turned Emir to Order. While we revert and denounce the conferment of Sheikh Yahquub Abdul-Baaqi Mohqmmed as Waziri of Yoruba Land is totally unacceptable and hereby declared null and void.

"We hereby categorically demand that if the Oba has lost total respect for tradition and particularly the highly referred stool of Iwo and Yoruba Land, having accepted to be guided by the Northern rules, a huge abomination and taboo( Epe NLA)hence, he Oluwo should be striped off of his title as the Oluwo of Iwo Kingdom," the statement reads.

The group therefore asked Governor Rauf Aregbesola to call the monarch to order.

For a Facebook user, Afeez Gbadamosi, Oba Akanbi should be called to order saying "this is cultural genocide. I seriously don't the logic behind this. He should be called to order before he main our highly revered culture further."

Another Facebook user, Olamilekan Abdulgafar Ogundele, who commented on the official Facebook page of  Oluwo described the decision as shameful.

Ogundele said, "what a shameful decision! This needs to be ridiculed and dethroned immediately."

Nonetheless, some other Facebook handlers who commented on the message Oluwo posted on his wall announcing his adoption of Emir title, hailed him.

Eatsern Reporter had reported on Saturday that Oluwo, whiks speaking at the installation and turbarning ceremony of an Islamic scholar, Sheikh Yahquub Abdul-Baaqi Mohammed as first Waziri of Yoruba land held in his palace said he decided to bear "Emir of Iwoland" because he wants to emulate the attitudes of northern Emirs.

According to Oluwo, Northern traditional rulers are better behaved than his counterparts from the Southwest saying Yoruba Obas are full of bickering, acrimony and enmities.

He said Yoruba traditional rulers lack cooperation and expected royal characters saying the Yoruba Obas have been polarized owing to enmities.

Oba Akanbi said until Yoruba Obas come together, shun enmities and backbiting, Hausas would continue to rule Nigeria.

"I have decided to officially adopt Emir title today because I want to emulate the attitudes of Northern Emirs. They don't begrudge themselves like Yoruba Obas.

" It will surprise you to discover that for the past two years, there has not been meeting of Yoruba traditional rulers just because of enmities. There is nothing strange in adopting Emir title. I am the Emir of Yorubaland," Oluwo said.
