Some gunmen have shot dead a cleric, Pastor Benson Isibor, in the Egor Local Government Area of Edo State.

It was learnt that Isibor was killed at his residence on First Oranmiyan Street on Monday.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the assailants had trailed the victim, said to be a pastor at the Christ Chosen Church of God in Benin, as he returned home.

The gunmen were said to have followed him into his compound before firing shots at him.

He reportedly died on the spot.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Johnson Kokumo, confirmed the incident on Tuesday.

Kokumo, who spoke while parading 28 suspected criminals in Benin, said the matter was being treated as a case of murder.

He said, “We are aware of the incident and it is being investigated. It was a clear case of murder. At about 11.30pm yesterday (Monday), Pastor Benson Isibor, while returning to his house, entered his compound when the criminals actually followed him in.

“He never suspected that the criminals were coming from behind. As he was entering the compound, they followed him and rained bullets on him.”

The commissioner assured the public that the police would arrest the perpetrators.

“So, it was a very clear case of murder and we are investigating. We may not put what we intend to do in the public domain so that it does not appear counterproductive.

“But what is important is that we are aware of this and we are investigating the matter. I assure you that no stone will be left unturned in our efforts to establish the mystery behind the murder,” he added.
