These are the top 25 biggest companies in Africa. The list shows the biggest public African companies based on their market value. This list was created by
Africaranking.com
South Africa still dominates the list. But some countries like Nigeria and Morocco are quickly catching up. Find out what the largest companies in Africa are and just how many billion US dollars they are worth!

25) FBN Holdings – Nigeria – $0.6B

FBN Holdings as the name says is a holding company for the First Bank of Nigeria. They have over 10 million active customers in Nigeria and employ over 7000 people in 750 locations across Africa. It was named the best bank brand 5 years in a row. And it is one of the most innovative banks in Africa.

24) Zenith Bank – Nigeria – $1.9B
Zenith Bank Plc is a banking and financial services company from Nigeria. Founded in 1990 it is now the second largest bank in Nigeria. The company has over 7400 employees and the headquarters are in Lagos. Zenith Bank has subsidiaries in the UK, UAE, Ghana, Gambia and Sierra Leone. Its stock is listed on both the Nigerian Stock Exchange and the London Stock Exchange.

23) Massmart Holdings – South Africa – $2.2B

Massmart is a South African company that owns stores like Makro, Game and Builder’s Warehouse. It is one of the largest retailers of consumer goods, liquor, home improvement tools and food in South Africa.
In total they own and operate over 400 stores and have more than 45,000 personnel.

22) Guaranty Trust Bank- Nigeria – $2.2B

Founded in 1990 the Guaranty Trust Bank became a public company in 1996. It was the first sub-saharan bank to be listed on the London and German stock exchanges. It is one of the partners in the Eko Atlantic City. This is a man-made island that will host the new financial district in Lagos, Nigeria. It is currently active in 8 other African countries and employs over 10,000 people.

21) MMI Holdings – South Africa – $2.6B

MMI holdings is active in life and health insurance. With over 17,000 employees they are one of the largest insurance companies in Africa.

20) Imperial Holdings – South Africa – $3.7B

Imperial is a conglomerate that has interests in a lot of different areas. Industrial logistics, car rental/leasing, retail, insurance, and many others. With sales of over $10B a year it is no surprise that they employ 51,000 people.

19) BMCE Bank- Morocco – $3.8B

The BMCE bank is the first Moroccan company in this list. It was founded in 1959 in Casablanca, Morocco where they still have their headquarters. Operating over 500 branches they have a personnel of almost 5,000.

18) Banque Centrale Populaire – Morocco – $4.1B

The BCP is another bank from Morocco. Founded in 1926 they are the second largest bank in Morocco. They employ around 12,000 people and have a customer deposit market share of 28%.

17) AngloGold Ashanti – South Africa – $5.4B

AngloGold Ashanti is a global gold mining corporation. They own gold mining operations in 17 different locations all over the world. But they are mainly active in South Africa, Ghana and Mali. In 2014 they were the 3rd largest gold miner in the world by gold produced. No recent numbers are available but in 2011 over 60,000 people worked in Africa’s largest public gold company.

16) Commercial International Bank – Egypt – $5.5B

The Commercial International Bank is the only Egyptian company on this overview of
largest companies in Africa. They provide a large number of different financial services in Egypt. Their headquarters are in Giza, Egypt and they employ almost 6,000 people.

15) RMB Holdings – South Africa – $5.8B

RMB holdings is a holding company for a South African bank that is active in investment, retail and commercial banking. Roughly 22,000 people work there and in 2015 they had a net income of $500 million.

14) Shoprite Holdings – South Africa – $6.7B

Shoprite is mostly active in food retail. However, some of their supermarket stores also offer clothing, cosmetics, liquor and other merchandise. With sales of $9.29B it is to be expected that almost 133,000 people work at Shoprite or their subsidiaries.

13) Attijariwafa Bank – Morocco – $7.2B

12) Bidvest Group – South Africa – $8.4B

Bidvest is a conglomerate active in a large variety of sectors. From automotive, financial, freight and travel services to catering, leisure and food-processing companies. Bidvest has a stake in almost everything you can think of. The company is located in Johannesburg and employs a staggering 141,000 people!

11) Remgro – South Africa – $9.3B

Remgro Ltd. is another conglomerate that invests in almost anything. They own parts of food producers, banks, healthcare providers and infrastructure companies. They are also active in sport and media. The company was founded in 1940 and almost 22,000 people work there.

10) Aspen Pharmacare Holdings – South Africa – $10.1B

Aspen Pharmacare Holdings is the only pharmaceutical company in this list. It is by far the biggest pharmaceutical company in Africa. They supply branded and generic medicine and other similar products like eye drops, ointments and nutrition for infants. More than 10,000 people work there and their main center is located in Durban, South Africa.

9) Sanlam – South Africa – $10.5B

Sanlam is a South African Life & Health insurance company. Founded in 1918 they are headquartered in Bellville, South Africa. They have 14,700 employees and total sales of $6.58B

cool Dangote Cement – Nigeria – $13.8B

Dangote Cement is the biggest company in Nigeria. Founded in 1992 it is now active in 15 countries throughout Africa. The focus of the company is still cement. Over time the parent company has added food products like sugar, flour and salt.
Sales clocked in at $2.48B. The company employed over 14,000 people and the headquarters are still in Lagos, Nigeria. The owner Aliko Dangote is the richest man in Africa.

7) Standard Bank Group – South Africa – $14.4B

Founded over 154 years ago the Standard Bank of South Africa is one of the largest financial companies in South Africa. It is active in 20 countries across Africa and the world. In 2015 its revenue was $16.2 billion. In recent years it has been plagued by very low customer satisfaction in South Africa. The latest employee figures show that over 69,000 people work at this bank.

6) Vodacom – South Africa – $14.6B

Vodacom is a South African based telecom provider with over 55 million customers. They are mostly active in South Africa, Tanzania, Republic of Congo, Mozambique and Lesotho. Though they provide some services in more than 40 African countries. Their parent company is the telecom giant Vodafone. In 2015 Vodacom had a net income of $850 million and employed just below 8,000 people.

5) FirstRand – South Africa – $18.5B

FirstRand is a South African bank that offers insurance, banking and investments services. Where other banks sometimes focus on one customer group FirstRand has customers from all sectors of the economy: individuals, companies and the government. The company was founded in 1970. It has its headquarters in Sandton, South Africa and employs more than 42,000 people. FirstRand is the biggest bank in South Africa.

4) MTN Group – South Africa – $18.9B

MTN Group is a South African telecommunication service provider. The company was only founded in 1994 and is now one of the biggest broadband, internet and mobile phone providers in Africa. Despite its sales of $11.5B they only have 22,000 employees.

3) Sasol – South Africa – $20.9B

Sasol Ltd. is a manufacturer of industrial chemicals. The company mainly focuses on liquid fuels, low-carbon electricity and various chemicals. The headquarters are in Johannesburg and nearly 31,000 people work at the company.

2) Steinhoff International – South Africa – $22.8B

Steinhoff is the second largest company in Africa. It is a retail holding company and mainly trades in household goods and furniture. The company is quickly expanding all over the world. For example, in 2016 it bought the Poundland discount chain in the UK for £610 million. The company is now also in talks to purchase the Mattress Firm based in the US for $3.8 billion.
In total the company operates 6500 stores and employs over 90,000 people. About 60% of the firm’s revenue is from Europe. These are a few of the South African brands Steinhoff owns: Pennypinchers, Timbercity, Shoe City, Unitrans.

1) The Biggest Company in Africa: Naspers – South Africa – $60B

Naspers is the biggest public company in Africa! They were founded in 1915 and they are active in broadcasting and cable services. Its main source of income is from internet services like classifieds, e-commerce and payment providers. On top of that they are active in TV, print media and book publishing. Its base of operations is in Cape Town, South Africa and they employ roughly 24,000 people.
