What's Now Happening To Michael Oliver After Champions League Controversy by PassionateSoul(m): 2:53am On Apr 17, 2018
It's been a hellish couple of days for referee Michael Oliver following the shock events that took place between Real Madrid and Juventus last Wednesday.
Just when it seemed the game was going to extra-time - Juve had somehow brought it back to 3-3 on aggregate - Oliver awarded a dubious penalty to Real in the dying embers of the game.
Medhi Benatia clumsily tackled Lucas Vazquez from behind to give away the spot-kick, with Juventus' players reacting to the decision by swarming Oliver.
Replays showed there wasn't loads of contact but giving a penalty was the correct decision - it would have been given anywhere else on the pitch at any other time.
Oliver has since received death threats and abuse on social media, to which UEFA themselves have responded by showing their full support for the 33-year-old.
A statement read: "We have been in contact with them to offer our support and we trust the relevant authorities to take action against those individuals who have behaved inappropriately."
Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), who are responsible for English referees, have also stood by Oliver as he prepares to officiate West Ham vs Stoke City on Monday.
THINGS GET EVEN WORSE
The abuse Oliver has received on social media has been disgusting and what's now happening to the Englishman is really just sad.
Because Oliver doesn't have Twitter, his wife, Lucy, has been targeted by a lot of the abuse instead over the past 24 hours, despite the fact she wasn't even involved.
This has resulted in the police getting involved by offering them support and protection. A spokesman said: "We are aware of threatening messages being posted on social media.
"This type of behaviour is completely unacceptable and those writing the messages need to be aware that they could be committing a criminal offence.
"Neighbourhood officers are in touch with the victims in this case to offer them support and ensure any further offences are reported to police."
All this because of one refereeing decision - it's just getting a bit ridiculous now.
